MediaTek unveils its latest flagship System-on-Chip, the Dimensity 9400, featuring advanced processing power, improved energy efficiency, and cutting-edge artificial intelligence capabilities.
MediaTek Launches Groundbreaking Dimensity 9400 SoC with AI Capabilities
MediaTek, a globally recognised semiconductor company, has introduced its latest flagship System-on-Chip (SoC), the Dimensity 9400. This unveiling marks MediaTek’s fourth annual flagship chip and highlights significant advancements in processing power and energy efficiency, alongside enhanced artificial intelligence (AI) capabilities.
The Dimensity 9400 is developed on the Arm v9.2 CPU architecture and showcases an ambitious configuration of cores. The chip integrates an Arm Cortex-X925 core clocked at an impressive 3.62GHz, three Cortex-X4 cores operating at 3.3GHz, and four Cortex-A720 efficiency cores running at 2.4GHz. This configuration is a step up from its predecessor, the Dimensity 9300, which had a maximum frequency of 3.25GHz with Cortex-X3 cores.
In terms of performance, MediaTek claims the Dimensity 9400 achieves a 35% and 28% improvement in single-core and multi-core performance, respectively, when compared to previous models. This is bolstered by the chip’s utilisation of TSMC’s N3E process technology, contributing to a 40% enhancement in power efficiency over last year’s top benchmarks.
The graphics processing capabilities have similarly advanced, with the inclusion of a 12-core Arm Immortalis-G925 GPU. This GPU promises a 41% increase in performance and a substantial 44% boost in power efficiency, catering to the demands of graphically-intensive applications and gaming.
One of the most significant strides made with the Dimensity 9400 is located within its AI processing prowess, courtesy of the newly integrated Neural Processing Unit (NPU). This NPU boasts an 80% faster response to Large Language Model (LLM) prompts and doubles the efficiency in diffusion generation performance. The inclusion of the proprietary “Agentic AI engine” facilitates on-device Low-Rank Adaptation of Large Language Models (LoRA) training and supports high-quality on-device video generation, allowing for improved AI application integration.
The technical enhancements extend beyond processing power; the Dimensity 9400 utilises LPDDR5X memory with speeds reaching up to 10.7 Gbps and offers critical upgrades to its cache architecture—doubling the L2 Cache and expanding the L3 Cache by 50%. These features significantly reduce reliance on RAM, enhancing device performance in terms of loading times and overall efficiency.
Benchmark testing reveals the Dimensity 9400 garnering scores of 3,055 in single-core and 9,600 in multi-core tests on Geekbench 6.2, with an AnTuTu performance standing at 2.8 million.
Describing the strategic importance of this new release, Joe Chen, President of MediaTek, articulated, “The MediaTek Dimensity 9400 will continue furthering our mission as enablers of AI, aimed at supporting applications that anticipate users’ needs and adapt to preferences.”
The market response and uptake for MediaTek products have been notable, especially through partnerships with companies like Xiaomi and Oppo, which have led to a 30% market share growth in European markets and a 50% increase in year-over-year growth. Additionally, Samsung’s decision to incorporate a MediaTek 9300 Plus chip in its Galaxy Tab S10 series signifies a growing acceptance and confidence in MediaTek’s products within the global arena, potentially paving the way for the Dimensity 9400’s inclusion in future devices.
Moreover, the Dimensity 9400 introduces an innovative combined 4nm Wi-Fi/Bluetooth chip, reducing power consumption by 50% compared to previous designs. Noteworthy is its support for Qi-Fi 7 tri-band MLO technology and compatibility with tri-fold smartphone designs—reflecting MediaTek’s foresight in catering to the burgeoning developments within multi-fold mobile device concepts.
This launch places MediaTek in a competitive position against contemporaries like Qualcomm, with the Snapdragon 8 Gen 4 announcement looming, positioning itself as a formidable player with its AI-centric approach and leading-edge hardware specifications.
