VIENNA – In a notable interview at the Open Source Summit held in Vienna last month, Linus Torvalds, the renowned creator of the Linux operating system, shared his candid views on the current state of AI technology. Known for his direct and unreserved communication style, Torvalds’s comments have gained significant attention, drawing both interest and critique from the technology community.

During the interview with tech media outlet TFiR, Torvalds expressed a sceptical view of the AI industry, pointing out that much of what is popularised as AI is dominated by marketing rather than being rooted in substantial technological advancement. “I think the whole tech industry around AI is in a very bad position,” Torvalds commented, estimating that the industry’s substance is “90 percent marketing and ten percent reality.”

Despite his critical outlook, Torvalds acknowledged AI’s potential to create significant changes in various fields. He suggested that in time, the technology will mature, stating, “In five years, things will change, and at that point we’ll see what of the AI is getting used every day for real workloads instead of just ChatGPT.”

Reflecting on his impressions of current AI models such as large language systems, Torvalds appeared doubtful of their immediate practicality. He remarked that while these models, including OpenAI’s ChatGPT, make “great, like, demonstrations,” their utility remains insufficient in truly transformative applications.

Torvalds highlighted the industry’s tendency towards overhyping AI capabilities without a clear pathway to profitability or reliability. This commentary aligns with ongoing discussions about the challenges AI faces, such as models producing inaccurate or misleading information – an issue often referred to as ‘hallucinations’. These problems persist despite significant financial investments into the technology.
