Johnnie Walker unveils a unique collection of 5,000 limited edition bottles featuring generative AI designs in collaboration with artist Andy Gellenberg, pushing the boundaries of personalised consumer experiences.
Johnnie Walker Embarks on a Technological Journey: Launches AI-Enhanced Bottle Designs
In a striking intersection of art, technology, and traditional whisky craftsmanship, Diageo-owned Johnnie Walker has unveiled a groundbreaking collection of 5,000 bottles adorned with generative artificial intelligence (AI) designs. This innovative venture is a collaboration with acclaimed German graphic artist Andy Gellenberg, renowned for his vivid pop art creations.
The renowned whisky brand, famed for its iconic Black Label, has taken a bold leap into the technological landscape by merging Gellenberg’s 50 original pieces of artwork with the avant-garde capabilities of generative AI. This fusion has resulted in a highly collectible series of bottles, each reflecting a unique design, tailored to resonate with the diverse identities of modern consumers.
Joao Matos, Johnnie Walker’s global marketing and innovation director, spoke about the initiative, noting it as a significant stride toward evolving consumer experiences with the brand. “This collaboration with Andy Gellenberg is a step toward reimagining how people experience our brand,” Matos explained. “By blending cutting-edge AI technology with creative artistry, we’re pushing the boundaries of personalisation.”
Gellenberg himself shared insights into the process, describing it as a confluence of art and technology that celebrates global diversity. “Collaborating with Johnnie Walker to create these unique portraits has been an incredible journey,” he said. “This project celebrates the vibrant diversity of people worldwide, highlighting how every face and story adds to the bigger picture.”
Central to this initiative is ‘Project Vision’, a pioneering platform by Diageo that enables the creation of unique bottle designs at scale. This breakthrough is part of Diageo’s broader strategy to offer personalised experiences across diverse markets globally, while simultaneously upholding the brand’s esteemed heritage.
Previously, Johnnie Walker embarked on a similar creative venture with the ‘Blend of Artistry’ project. This initiative allowed visitors at Johnnie Walker’s Edinburgh location to use generative AI to personalise Blue Label designs, inspired by Scottish artist Scott Naismith’s works.
The limited edition Johnnie Walker Black Label x Andy Gellenberg bottles will debut in Germany, where they will be available at an RRP of €34.99 (approximately US$37.73). Consumers can purchase these unique products via johnniewalker.com and selected retailers.
This ambitious project marks a thrilling chapter in the intersection of AI and whisky, illustrating a promising future for innovation in the spirits industry. As the world watches, Johnnie Walker continues to blend tradition with modernity, finding new avenues to engage and captivate its dedicated consumers.
