James Anderson expresses interest in IPL participation

James Anderson, the former England fast bowler, has expressed his interest in participating in the Indian Premier League (IPL) for the forthcoming season. The 41-year-old cricketer, renowned for his exceptional Test career, has surprisingly registered for the IPL auction despite not having played a Twenty20 (T20) match since 2014. Speaking to Sky Sports, Anderson revealed his eagerness to return to competitive cricket, although he remains uncertain about the interest levels from any of the ten IPL franchises.

Anderson, who last donned England colours in a T20 match back in 2014, has limited T20 experience under his belt, having played only 44 matches in this format. Despite this, his joy for the game remains undiminished. “There’s definitely a feeling inside of me that I’ve got more to offer, in some shape or form,” Anderson commented. He remains physically fit, continuing to train and bowl, hopeful that an opportunity to play could arise.

Internationally, Anderson boasts an illustrious career in Test cricket, having claimed an impressive tally of over 700 wickets in 187 Tests. He is only the third player in history to achieve this landmark, joining spin legends Shane Warne and Muttiah Muralitharan. Anderson reached the 700-wicket milestone in a Test match against India in Dharamsala in March 2023.

Adding to the cricketing narrative, England’s white-ball captain Jos Buttler is set to return to competitive cricket against West Indies in an upcoming five-match T20I series. Buttler, who last played for England during the T20 World Cup semi-final against India, has taken time to recover from injury, missing the recent ODI series against the West Indies, which England lost 1-2 under Liam Livingstone’s leadership.

Buttler, in his interaction with the media, detailed how the time away from the sport has offered him a renewed perspective and motivation. “You get a nice perspective of, when cricket has taken away from you, how great it is, how important it is,” stated Buttler. The 34-year-old emphasised the excitement of returning to play and the anticipation of pulling on the England jersey once again.

Looking forward, Brendon McCullum, England’s Test coach, is poised to assume the role of the white-ball coach from January 2025. His rapport with Buttler has already provided the latter with invaluable insights. Discussing conversations with McCullum, Buttler highlighted how McCullum’s experiences as a captain could enhance the current stage of his career. “It is not about you at all, it is about creating that environment and letting people flourish,” Buttler remarked.

Underlining the potential in the English squad, Buttler praised emerging talents like Jacob Bethell and Dan Mousley for their performances in the ODI series against the West Indies, expressing excitement for the future of English cricket.
