These campaigns, which specifically target enterprises worldwide, exploit the reputation of prominent AI company OpenAI to deceive victims into revealing sensitive information.
The phishing attack involves a deceptive email that purportedly originates from OpenAI, bearing the guise of an ‘urgent message.’ This email urges recipients to update their payment details for their supposed subscription, offering a convenient direct link which is, in fact, a trap designed to harvest personal financial information. The scale of the operation is notable, with the fraudulent email being dispatched to over 1,000 individuals.
A critical indicator of the email’s fraudulent nature lies in the sender’s address. Rather than emanating from an official OpenAI domain, such as those ending in @openai.com, the messages originate from the address [email protected]. Such incongruities serve as an alert to discerning recipients, yet might escape the notice of the less vigilant.
Compounding the threat, the email manages to successfully pass through DomainKeys Identified Mail (DKIM) and Sender Policy Framework (SPF) checks. This technical evaluation suggests the email was sent from a server authorised to dispatch emails on behalf of its claimed domain, adding a layer of credibility to the deceitful communication.
