Acclaimed filmmaker Yann Gozlan explores artificial intelligence and its effect on creativity in his latest project, featuring a star-studded cast and set for release in 2025.
Yann Gozlan, the acclaimed French filmmaker known for his past successes with “Black Box” and “A Perfect Man,” is set to captivate audiences once again with his latest project, “The Residence.” This intriguing psychological thriller ventures into the realm of artificial intelligence and its impact on human creativity.
In “The Residence,” Gozlan collaborates with a notable cast, including Cécile de France, known for her role in “The Young Pope,” and Lars Mikkelsen of “House of Cards” fame. The film also features French music icon Mylène Farmer, expanding her presence from the stage to the screen. The film’s production is a joint effort with Gaumont, a leading French production house, co-handling international sales and distribution.
Gaumont, which has teased the first stills of the film through a preview by Variety, will be promoting “The Residence” to international buyers at the American Film Market (AFM). The company’s EVP of international sales and distribution, Alexis Cassanet, praises the film for its timely exploration of AI’s influence on creative fields such as writing and film-making.
“The Residence” is set in an imagined near future and revolves around Clarissa, portrayed by De France, a novelist struggling with writer’s block. She finds herself in a prestigious artist residency equipped with cutting-edge technology where she is assisted by an AI named Dalloway, voiced by Farmer. Initially a supportive presence, Dalloway’s role soon becomes unsettlingly intrusive, prompting Clarissa to heed warnings from Mathias, a whistleblower artist played by Mikkelsen. Mathias unveils the complex motives behind the residency and its associated tech corporation, prompting Clarissa to reassess her seemingly advantageous situation as a possible entrapment.
The film is currently in post-production and stands as Gozlan’s follow-up to “Black Box,” a flight-themed thriller that grossed $9.4 million with 1.2 million tickets sold in France. Gozlan’s initial breakthrough came with “A Perfect Man,” a global success, further cementing his expertise in crafting engaging thrillers.
Produced by Nicolas and Éric Altmayer of Mandarin & Compagnie, the film seeks to delve into poignant themes of tech influence, artist autonomy, and organisational intentions. The Altmayer brothers are well-known for their work on various prominent films, including François Ozon’s “By The Grace of God.”
Gaumont plans to release “The Residence” in France in the third quarter of 2025. Alongside this release, Gaumont’s slate at AFM includes other high-profile projects, such as “High in the Clouds,” an adaptation of Paul McCartney’s children’s book, and “The Wizard of the Kremlin,” a political thriller by Olivier Assayas featuring an ensemble cast including Paul Dano and Jude Law.
Yann Gozlan’s “The Residence” is poised to intrigue audiences with its tense narrative and exploration of contemporary themes, further solidifying Gozlan’s reputation as a master of modern French thrillers.
