In a timely rescue operation, the Wells RNLI inshore lifeboat was dispatched yesterday after a pair of individuals found themselves trapped by the rising tide on Scolt Head Island, located off the coast of North Norfolk. The incident occurred late Friday afternoon, prompting an urgent response following an alert from the Humber Coastguard.

The lifeboat, manned by a three-person crew, launched at approximately 4:30 pm. The team navigated through the harbour channel towards the island, a well-known offshore barrier between Brancaster and Wells-next-the-Sea. However, at 4:50 pm, they received updates that the individuals at risk had been successfully picked up by a local fisherman and were en route to safety.

Upon reaching the shore, the pair was met and assessed by the local coastguard team, who confirmed that no further medical assistance was necessary.

This incident highlights the potential dangers posed by the rapidly changing coastal conditions in the region. Chris Hardy, the Lifeboat Operations Manager for Wells RNLI, reiterated the importance of being mindful of tidal patterns, especially during the colder months when the threat of cold water shock significantly increases.

“Getting cut off by the tide at this time of the year can be particularly dangerous,” Hardy commented. He advised that individuals should always monitor tide times closely and aim to leave vulnerable areas like offshore islands well in advance of high tide. Specifically, beach-goers are recommended to return to the beach at least four hours before the predicted high tide at Wells Bar.

The quick actions of the local fisherman played a crucial role in ferrying the stranded individuals to safety, highlighting the community’s vital role in supporting the RNLI’s life-saving operations.
