The UK Government introduces a new artificial intelligence-powered search engine on its GOV.UK website, enhancing accessibility and user experience for millions of daily visitors.
The United Kingdom Government has introduced a cutting-edge artificial intelligence (AI)-powered search engine on its GOV.UK website, aiming to streamline access to public services and information. The development of this new search capability is the result of a collaboration with Kin + Carta, a digital transformation consultancy, deploying Google Cloud’s Vertex AI Search technology. The enhancement reflects efforts to accommodate modern search behaviour, leveraging AI to improve information accessibility.
Minister for Digital Government and AI, Feryal Clark, highlighted the importance of this technological advancement, stating that the millions of daily visitors to GOV.UK make it essential to ensure a seamless experience when accessing critical information and services. The AI-powered search engine is designed to deliver faster and more relevant search results, enhancing user experiences regardless of their digital proficiency.
The project, led by the Government Digital Service (GDS), aims to update how users interact with the website’s extensive repository of information and policies. According to GDS Deputy Director Leanne Cummings, the enhanced search engine has already demonstrated significant improvements in user experience since its soft launch in February 2024. This launch was kept under wraps until now to ensure satisfactory performance results.
Kin + Carta played a pivotal role in this transformation, leading the integration of Google Cloud’s Vertex AI Search. This tool exploits natural language models to address the increasingly conversational nature of online searches. This integration promises more accurate and accessible information retrieval, ultimately enhancing public engagement with government services. Early testing indicated that the new search model resulted in a 14% increase in users clicking through to relevant content, an 11% reduction in search refinements, and an 8% decrease in users leaving the site from the search page.
Karl Hampson, Chief Technology Officer for Data and AI in Europe at Kin + Carta, remarked on the importance of aligning search functions with evolving user behaviours and language. As the GOV.UK website hosts hundreds of thousands of pages of vital resources, the introduction of AI has been instrumental in revolutionising search capability, enabling a deeper understanding of user queries and simplifying site navigation.
This development comes amid Google’s own challenges with AI integration earlier in the year. Google’s AI Overviews feature aimed to simplify search processes by delivering straightforward answers to queries. However, it faced criticism for inaccuracies. Despite this, Kin + Carta and GDS express confidence in the new GOV.UK search engine’s ability to circumvent similar pitfalls, providing effective and efficient search experiences.
Sam Ineson, Director of Public Sector at Kin + Carta, noted that the innovative search function is designed to overcome barriers faced by non-digital natives, ensuring that all users, especially those most in need of government services, can efficiently locate necessary information using natural language.
The introduction of the AI-powered search engine marks a significant stride in the UK Government’s digital strategy, demonstrating a commitment to harnessing advanced technology to better serve its citizens.
