Grammy-winning producer Timbaland teams up with Suno, an AI music platform, as strategic advisor, aiming to revolutionise music creation despite ongoing legal challenges.
In a strategic shift that combines technological innovation with musical artistry, Grammy-winning producer Timbaland has formally aligned with Suno, an emerging force in the artificial intelligence (AI) music sector. Announced this week, Timbaland steps into the role of strategic advisor for the company, a move that underscores his belief in Suno’s transformative technology in music creation—an area that has sparked both intrigue and controversy within the music industry.
Suno, an AI music company that allows users to generate complete songs using simple text prompts, gained attention earlier this year when it was embroiled in legal battles with major music labels over allegations of copyright infringement. The company, along with competitor Udio, faced a lawsuit accusing it of utilising copyrighted sound recordings without consent for AI training, a claim that stirred significant debate regarding intellectual property rights in an age of rapid technological advancement. Suno staunchly defended its practices, arguing that its use of music files available on the internet fell under “fair use.”
Despite the legal challenges, Timbaland’s association with Suno appears to solidify the company’s credibility and bolster its innovative aspirations. Recognised for his unique sound and contributions to contemporary music, Timbaland has been identified as a “top user” of Suno’s platform and will now actively partake in its product development and creative strategic direction.
To mark the commencement of this partnership, Timbaland will release his latest single, “Love Again,” exclusively on Suno, initiating a remix contest on the platform. The contest invites users to create their own versions of the track, offering them a chance to engage directly with Timbaland, who will provide feedback and judge submissions. Suno has announced that the contest will distribute over $100,000 in prizes, with the top two remixes receiving a coveted release on major streaming platforms such as Spotify and Apple Music.
Suno’s CEO, Mikey Shulman, expressed enthusiasm about Timbaland’s involvement, conveying that this collaboration aims to redefine how fans interact with music and their favourite artists. “It’s an honour to work with a legend like Timbaland,” Shulman stated. “At Suno, we’re really excited about exploring new ways for fans to engage with their favourite artists. With Timbaland’s guidance, we’re helping musicians create music at the speed of their ideas—whether they’re just starting out or already selling out stadiums.”
The company’s progress and ambition are evidenced by its substantial financial backing; Suno has secured $125 million across multiple funding rounds, supported by prominent investors such as Lightspeed Venture Partners and Founder Collective. The company also benefits from the expertise of a diverse advisory board comprising music, tech, and business luminaries like 3LAU, Aaron Levie, and Flosstradamus.
Timbaland’s commitment to this venture signals a significant moment for AI’s role in music production, offering possibilities for artists to expand creative horizons and redefine the industry landscape. His collaboration with Suno marks a new chapter in harnessing AI to potentially democratise music creation, amidst ongoing discussions on the ethical and legal implications tied to AI’s rapid integration into traditional industries.
