As AI tools become integral to corporate efficiency, a new cadre of ‘super users’ emerges, transforming productivity while raising concerns about privacy and skills erosion.
The Rise of AI ‘Super Users’ in the Workplace
In a rapidly evolving corporate landscape, artificial intelligence (AI) tools like ChatGPT and Microsoft Copilot are becoming integral to increasing workplace productivity, especially for those labelled as ‘super users.’ These tech-savvy individuals integrate AI into their daily work routines, leading to significant boosts in efficiency, creativity, and confidence. However, concerns about privacy, accuracy, skill erosion, and job displacement loom large.
Lisa Ross, vice president at Avenue, a corporate training enterprise in Canada, exemplifies this new wave of AI integration. Living with attention-deficit/hyperactivity disorder (ADHD), Ross, who uses they/them pronouns, has harnessed AI to more than double their productivity. AI assists them in a range of tasks, from content creation and strategic planning to custom bot development — an area in which they have crafted about 40 unique bots. This technological proficiency has earned Ross the informal title of “AI guy” within the company, making them a go-to advisor on AI implementation.
AI adoption at work remains at an early stage. A Gallup survey indicates that only 4% of workers use AI daily, while 67% have yet to adopt it into their work routines. Nonetheless, those who do employ AI — primarily white-collar professionals — report marked improvements in productivity and innovation.
Ilker Erkut, an administrative operations assistant at the University of Maryland, discovered AI’s potential during a tight deadline to summarise book themes. By using ChatGPT, Erkut completed the task in half the expected time, allowing him to expand his involvement in other projects.
AI aids in skill development as well. Erkut uses AI tools for learning advanced Excel functions and designing custom graphics. “My creativity is higher because I’m focusing on the areas I want to use my own brain for,” said the 26-year-old.
In the bustling environment of a design agency in Mumbai, Kanika Khurana, the former head of design at ProCreator, employs AI for tasks like summarising meeting minutes and preparing interview feedback. Her team has developed custom bots to assist junior employees in producing client-specific content.
Jake Samuelson, co-founder of the San Mateo-based AI learning platform Uplimit, leverages AI for data analysis and product development. While he acknowledges AI’s occasional flaws in data reporting, Samuelson saves considerable time, enhancing productivity by letting AI handle repetitive tasks.
AI’s experimental foray into traditional workplace areas brings challenges. Becca Chambers, former CCO at ControlUp in Florida, mitigates AI errors in transcriptions and grammar checks using the AI search engine Perplexity. She has even developed a BeccaGPT bot, extending its use for content creation in her distinctive voice.
For Stan Sukhinin, founder of financial consultancy firm Sorso in Austin, AI assists in overcoming language barriers and sophisticated data analysis. However, AI’s occasional inaccuracies require diligent oversight.
While workers enjoy efficiency gains, experts urge caution. Potential pitfalls include biased AI outputs, skill decay, and security concerns if sensitive data is improperly handled. Arvind Karunakaran from Stanford University stresses the need for a balanced approach to maintain necessary human skills.
Despite these challenges, industry leaders predict a future where autonomous AI becomes commonplace. Salesforce and Nvidia events highlight AI’s transformative potential, hinting at a future where digital assistants autonomously complete tasks.
For Ross, the AI-enhanced approach has not only increased empathy in difficult conversations but also expanded their job responsibilities, reflecting AI’s broader impact on traditional workplace roles. “I’ve gone from supporting everyone to … helping find where the company is going,” Ross remarked, capturing the optimism and trepidation surrounding AI’s evolving role in the professional world.
