The drone industry is on the brink of a substantial expansion, as projected trends indicate a significant shift in the civil and commercial applications of Small Unmanned Aerial Systems (sUAS), commonly known as drones. A recent report by ABI Research forecasts that the share of sUAS in the overall market will surge from a mere 8 per cent to a striking 32 per cent by the year 2030. This considerable growth is expected to redefine the dynamics of various sectors, particularly in delivering services and enhancing operational efficiencies.
Annual drone shipments are anticipated to increase dramatically, more than doubling from 1.5 million units in 2024 to 3.32 million by 2030. Such an escalation is projected to create a thriving market ecosystem that could see its value increase fourfold, ultimately generating an estimated $123 billion in annual revenue by the end of the decade. The underlying drivers for this growth are largely attributed to advancements in technology and regulatory changes that facilitate the expanded use of drones.
George Chowdhury, a robotics industry analyst at ABI Research, identifies easing regulations and increased autonomy as pivotal elements contributing to this trend. He emphasizes that the capability to operate drones safely in urban areas and across extended distances, known as flying Beyond Visual Line of Sight (BVLOS), will unlock significant value for various industries. Chowdhury states, “sUAS can potentially revolutionize many industries, notably last mile delivery and agriculture, where the advantage of low-cost drones is second to none.”
The commercial drone sector is witnessing swift advancements, with notable companies making headway in automation and inspection efficiency. For instance, Gather AI is pioneering warehouse automation solutions, while Flyability and Percepto are enhancing inspection capabilities across various industries. In agriculture and real estate, firms like Sentera and Skywash are utilising drone technology to extract new forms of value from their operations.
The last-mile delivery segment represents the most significant growth opportunity within the sUAS space. According to ABI Research, revenue generated from last-mile delivery is predicted to rise dramatically from $800 million to $12.4 billion by 2030, equating to a compound annual growth rate (CAGR) of an impressive 50.2 per cent. Major players leading this transformative sector include Zipline, Google’s Wing, and Amazon’s Prime Air, all of which are positioning themselves to capture substantial market share.
As the industry evolves, attachment rates for essential hardware components are also expected to increase substantially. The integration of technologies such as radar, LiDAR, and high-definition cameras will enhance drone capabilities and operational efficiency. Furthermore, the attachment rates for cellular antennas are poised to see growth, facilitating remote deployments and bolstering the private network capabilities of telecommunications companies including Ericsson and Nokia.
In a notable development, the integration of Artificial Intelligence (AI) chipsets, including Graphics Processing Units (GPUs) and Application-Specific Integrated Circuits (ASICs), is projected to reach 79 per cent across all drones by 2030. This represents a remarkable CAGR of 50 per cent. The incorporation of AI technology enables drones to execute performance-enhancing functions such as Simultaneous Localization and Mapping (SLAM), machine vision, and semi-autonomous flying capabilities.
The advent of airborne robotics is anticipated to deliver significant value across nearly every sector, prompting a transformation of existing business models and the exploration of new applications for robotics. As Chowdhury notes, “Business, Government, and Militaries would do well to stay abreast of developments in this space.” He points out that the Federal Aviation Administration (FAA) is continuously issuing waivers for BVLOS operations, signalling a wave of disruption and innovation poised to reshape the landscape of drone utilisation.
