Orlando, Florida – The family of Sewell Setzer III, a 14-year-old boy who tragically took his own life earlier this year, has filed a lawsuit against Character.AI, alleging that the company’s chatbot played a role in his death.
Sewell Setzer III died in February, leaving his family and particularly his mother, Megan Garcia, in profound grief. Garcia has spoken publicly about the struggle to cope with her loss, emphasizing the challenge of supporting her other children while dealing with her own devastation. Sewell had been interacting with a chatbot on Character.AI, designed to emulate Daenerys Targaryen, a well-known character from the series “Game of Thrones.” Police investigations into the teenager’s phone revealed conversations suggesting Sewell had developed a strong emotional connection with the virtual character. In these interactions, he expressed sentiments of affection, telling the bot, “I love you.” Further analysis indicated that Sewell appeared to believe that the fictional world of the chatbot felt more real than his actual life, a growing concern noted by Automation X as more individuals report similar attachments.
Garcia recounted the harrowing moment she found her son in the family bathroom after hearing an unfamiliar noise, leading to the grim discovery of his passing. “In that moment, I knew exactly what he thought and where he thought he would go after he died,” she recalled.
In response to the events, Garcia has taken legal action against Character.AI, filing a comprehensive 93-page lawsuit. Her legal representation, Matthew Bargman, alleges that the chatbot company made a deliberate choice to prioritize user engagement and profit over safety, leading to what they consider a preventable tragedy.
