In a recent survey conducted by SoundHound AI, it has been revealed that almost 80% of regular drivers are interested in integrating voice assistants with generative AI capabilities into their vehicles. This survey highlights the rising trend towards AI-enhanced technologies in the automotive industry, indicating a shift in consumer preferences towards more advanced, intelligible, and user-friendly vehicle systems.

The survey, spearheaded by Mike Zagorsek, Chief Operating Officer and Automotive lead at SoundHound AI, offers insightful data on how early adopters of AI-enhanced voice assistants have responded positively to these technologies. Zagorsek noted, “Over the last 12 months of deployment, it’s become clear that those early users see the value. In some cases, we’ve seen voice assistant usage increasing fivefold compared to a traditional vehicle voice assistant. That tells us that AI-powered technology is making a significant impact and is here to stay.”

The survey focused on drivers in prominent European countries such as the UK, Germany, and France. Despite current in-car voice assistants being primarily utilised for basic tasks, like navigation, controlling vehicle features, and making calls, drivers have expressed a strong inclination towards more sophisticated functionalities. The study indicates a demand for advanced features such as hands-free food ordering, better comprehension of vehicle alerts for proactive maintenance, and the ability to summarise text or email threads, thus enhancing productivity during travels.

The appetite for these advanced AI capabilities is notably high, with 84% of UK drivers, 82% of those in Germany, and 70% of French drivers showing a willingness to adopt AI-driven voice features if and when they become available. Furthermore, the survey disclosed that a significant portion of respondents, roughly 68%, are amenable to paying a fee or even accepting advertisements to access these advanced functionalities.

For drivers planning to purchase or lease a vehicle within the next year, the presence of AI-powered features has become a critical factor, with 83% favouring vehicles equipped with such technologies over those without.

The survey further highlighted a common pain point among drivers: the perceived complexity of current vehicle features. A notable 40% of drivers find existing interfaces challenging, with 50% reporting difficulties in performing typical tasks like GPS navigation. This context has sparked significant interest in AI-enhanced vehicle management tools, notably systems capable of clarifying alerts or scheduling maintenance. The desire for these advanced management features is most compelling in the UK (90%), followed by Germany (88%) and France (77%).

This heightened interest indicates a transformative phase within the automotive industry, as stakeholders are increasingly called to adapt to consumer demands for cutting-edge in-car technology that is intuitive and efficient. As these AI functionalities become more widespread, they are expected to further influence the evolution of Smart cars, shaping the future of travel with enhanced user experiences and optimised vehicle management.
