As South Korea grapples with declining birth rates, the nation is turning to advanced robotics as a solution to mitigate the impacts of a shrinking workforce. The country has committed significant financial resources to the development and integration of robotic technologies, positioning itself as a global leader in automation.

The World Robotics 2024 report, published by the International Federation of Robotics, sheds light on South Korea’s impressive adoption rates, revealing that the nation now boasts a remarkable density of 1,012 robots per 10,000 employees. This figure places South Korea at the forefront of robotics utilisation in industrial environments, well ahead of other countries. For context, Singapore ranks second with 770 robots per 10,000 employees, while the European Union averages just 219 units per 10,000 employees, with Germany, Sweden, and Denmark making notable appearances in the global top ten.

The demographic challenges faced by South Korea, marked by a declining population, have led to increasing scrutiny regarding the country’s long-term socio-economic stability. In response to these concerns, it is expected that South Korea will continue to expand its robotic workforce. The intention is to supplement human labour, particularly in sectors where shortages are anticipated due to demographic shifts.

Takayuki Ito, president of the International Federation of Robotics, indicated the broader significance of robot density, describing it as a barometer for the degree of automation adoption across the global manufacturing landscape. As industries evolve, the reliance on automation technologies is poised to reshape traditional business practices and operational capacities.

To further explore these advancements, the Robotics and Automation Exhibition, scheduled for 25-26 March 2025, will convene over 11,000 industry leaders to discuss cutting-edge technologies and innovations.
