Initially embarking on a career in mechanical engineering during her undergraduate studies at Georgia Tech, it was her tenure at Apple starting in 2009 that ignited her interest in AI technologies. Working at Apple, she contributed to groundbreaking projects like the development of the first MacBook Air and the iPad, eventually managing the product line for Apple’s laptops and accessories. Velastegui’s career later saw her as the head of silicon architecture and director of Google’s Nest product line, and briefly, as a part of the audio technology company Doppler Labs. It was in 2017, however, when she accepted a position at Microsoft amid the company’s transformative phase under CEO Satya Nadella. Her decision to join Microsoft was met with scepticism from peers and mentors, who viewed the company as lagging behind in AI innovations. Contrary to these perceptions, Velastegui successfully led AI initiatives across products such as LinkedIn, Bing, PowerPoint, Outlook, and Azure, spearheading projects involving OpenAI’s GPT-3 model.
Her contributions were pivotal during a time of strategic pivoting for Microsoft, propelling the company’s AI capabilities forward. By 2022, Velastegui ventured into entrepreneurship by launching a consulting firm while taking on a leadership role in product development at the automotive technology company, Aptiv. In 2023, Velastegui expanded her influence further by joining the National Science Foundation’s esteemed AI advisory committee.
