Rocket Learning’s innovative AI grading tool is transforming early childhood education in India, providing instant feedback to over three million children and fostering significant engagement.

In India, Rocket Learning, a New Delhi-based edtech organisation, has been pioneering the use of artificial intelligence to enhance early childhood education through an AI grader. This innovative tool is providing instant feedback on educational worksheets, facilitating the learning of over three million children under the age of six across various Indian states. Each day, this AI grading tool evaluates 50,000 digital worksheets, a significant leap from the mere 5% of worksheets that used to receive feedback.

The tool is part of a broader educational initiative by Rocket Learning, which collaborates with more than 200,000 daycare centres across ten Indian states. The overarching aim of the programme is to assist parents in imparting foundational learning skills to their children. The AI tool specifically helps young learners by providing instant feedback on exercises, such as those requiring students to identify and circle depictions of hands holding up two fingers. The AI then corrects the answers, highlighting any missed options or mistakes.

The development of this AI grading tool has been financially supported by a $1.5 million grant from Google.org. Furthermore, Google is actively involved in assisting Rocket Learning to develop an AI tutor component for their educational programmes, enhancing the capacity for machine learning applications. Vishal Sunil, CTO and co-founder at Rocket Learning, expresses optimism about the lessons learned from the already deployed AI grading tool, especially regarding technology’s potential role in education.

Despite an accuracy rate between 90% and 95%, Rocket Learning’s approach acknowledges that the tool’s occasional inaccuracies can be a teachable moment. Students who receive incorrect feedback are encouraged to engage with their teachers or connect via provided support channels, thus framing errors as opportunities for further learning and teacher-student interaction.

The use of the AI tool has dramatically increased the volume of feedback students receive, fostering greater engagement with Rocket Learning’s platform. This approach incorporates various tools that offer personalized problem sets and use gamification to maintain a high level of engagement with students, reducing stress while proving effective in assessment.

In addition to its immediate educational benefits, Rocket Learning has made its AI grading tool open source, with aspirations to offer exercises in English and potentially other languages. According to Sunil, the potential of AI, especially generative AI, to assist financially disadvantaged students and more broadly, is significant. He underscores the necessity for the educational sector to be proactive in designing educational tools with AI, steering the technology’s influence rather than reacting to it.

Sunil emphasizes that while the rapid evolution in educational technology has been largely unplanned and outside of educators’ control, there is a substantial opportunity for edtech to lead this transformation by designing efficient, generative AI experiences. Such design efforts could result in substantial savings in human effort and time, ultimately benefiting the educational landscape.
