In a recent podcast appearance, Robert Downey Jr. expressed his strong opposition to the use of generative AI to recreate his character Tony Stark, highlighting his ethical concerns amid ongoing discussions about technology in the entertainment industry.

Robert Downey Jr., renowned for his portrayal of Tony Stark in the Marvel Cinematic Universe (MCU), has voiced his opposition to the use of generative artificial intelligence (AI) to recreate his likeness for future projects. The acclaimed actor expressed his reservations during an appearance on the podcast “On With Kara Swisher,” alongside Pulitzer Prize-winning playwright Ayad Akhtar and Tony-winning director Bartlett Sher. The trio came together to discuss Akhtar’s Broadway debut in a play that delves into the potential dangers posed by artificial intelligence.

Downey expressed a firm stance against any future attempts to resurrect Tony Stark using AI, specifically generative AI technologies. In response to questions about how he perceives the advancements in AI and deepfake technologies, Downey remarked on how his own life and emotional experiences take precedence over technological concerns, suggesting he has limited time to focus on such advancements. Despite this, the actor conveyed confidence in the integrity of current decision-makers at Marvel Studios, stating that he trusts they would not resort to using AI to exploit his character: “There’s like three or four guys and gals who make all the decisions there anyway and they would never do that to me, with or without me,” Downey said.

The conversation shifted to the future, with podcast host Kara Swisher suggesting that future executives might be tempted to use AI to bring Tony Stark back. Downey humorously retorted that he would prepare to take legal action against such future decisions, even jesting about the longevity of his legal firm posthumously. This humorous exchange drew comparisons to Elvis Presley and the handling of his estate.

Aside from addressing AI concerns, Downey discussed his ongoing involvement with AI companies, indicating a balanced view towards investing in new technologies. His investments are guided by considerations of who leads these initiatives and the ethical frameworks they follow.

Downey’s remarks come at a time when he is involved in the Lincoln Center Theater production of “McNeal,” where he stars as a prominent novelist who employs AI to write. The play is set to run through November 24. While the production itself has garnered mixed reviews, Downey’s performance has been widely praised.

On the horizon, Downey is set to return to the Marvel universe, reportedly taking on the role of Dr. Doom in the upcoming films “Avengers: Doomsday” and “Avengers: Secret Wars,” helmed by the Russo Brothers. This return to the franchise further solidifies his status as one of the highest-earning actors in the Marvel Cinematic Universe, although it marks a shift from his iconic role as Iron Man.
