As the release of the PlayStation 5 Pro approaches, Sony showcases enhanced gameplay features for major titles including ‘The Last of Us Part 2 Remastered’ and ‘Alan Wake 2’, set to launch on 7 November 2023.
The attention of gamers and tech enthusiasts has been captured with Sony’s recent developments regarding the upcoming PlayStation 5 Pro and its enhancements for popular games, notably “The Last of Us Part 2 Remastered” and “Alan Wake 2”. These enhancements highlight the improvements and additional features available with the PlayStation 5 Pro, set to launch on 7 November 2023.
In anticipation of the PS5 Pro’s release, Naughty Dog, the developer behind “The Last of Us Part 2 Remastered”, has issued patch 1.2.0. This update introduces PS5 Pro support, providing a newfound rendering mode that utilizes PlayStation Spectral Super Resolution (PSSR) AI upscaling. This advancement allows the game to render at 1440p resolution, which is then upscaled to 4K while maintaining a 60 frames per second target. The existing Performance and Fidelity modes have also been enhanced to provide smoother gameplay and higher framerates than those seen on the original PS5.
“The Last of Us Part 2 Remastered”, initially released in January 2024, is an enhanced version of the acclaimed 2020 PlayStation 4 game. It aims to fully harness the capabilities of the PlayStation 5, and now, the PS5 Pro. The game is available for purchase as a standalone release, with an upgrade option available for PS4 version owners at a cost of $10/£10 through the PlayStation Store.
In addition to graphical improvements, the recent update addresses several issues within the game. Fixes include resolving trophy unlocking issues post-PS4 save data import, correcting character rendering glitches, and addressing gameplay mechanics bug fixes, particularly in the game’s segments titled “The Tunnels” and “No Return”. Further adjustments have been made to audio progression during speedruns, as well as expanding accessibility features and localization corrections.
Similarly, Remedy Entertainment has optimised “Alan Wake 2” to take full advantage of the PS5 Pro’s advanced hardware. The enhancements for the game will be evident in both its Quality and Performance modes, both employing Sony’s PSSR technique. In the Quality mode, the game will run at 30fps with ray-traced reflections and 4K output resolution. Conversely, the Performance mode will forgo ray tracing to achieve 60fps, still delivering 4K resolution, thus elevating the visual fidelity compared to the base PS5 setup.
Remedy’s efforts have concentrated on augmenting visual clarity and detail, improving features such as fog, volumetric lighting, and shadow precision. This enhancement process notably included testing higher rendering resolutions and integrating AI-based upscaling, which positively influenced the game’s visual stability and crispness during motion.
However, the developers acknowledged that incorporating these high-level visual features, particularly ray tracing, presented challenges, given the intricate graphical demands of the game. Nonetheless, Remedy expressed satisfaction with the improvements enabled by the PS5 Pro’s computational power and noted the GPU-driven rendering pipeline’s effectiveness in rendering the game’s richly detailed environments.
These game updates come amid the PlayStation 5 Pro’s impending release, positioning the console as a significant upgrade with features such as a faster GPU and CPU, enhanced ray tracing capabilities, and the introduction of PSSR. Consumers can anticipate experiencing these improvements first-hand when the PS5 Pro becomes available on 7 November.
