The Object Management Group has unveiled a new initiative to study the integration of AI with emerging technologies, bringing together experts from various consortia to foster innovative solutions across industries.
The Object Management Group (OMG) has officially launched a collaborative initiative named the Artificial Intelligence Joint Working Group, assembling expertise from across its various consortia to further explore the integration of artificial intelligence (AI) with emergent technologies such as digital twins and augmented reality (AR). The announcement was made by Bill Hoffman, the CEO and Chairman of the OMG.
The Artificial Intelligence Joint Working Group is a collective effort that includes members from the Digital Twin Consortium and the Augmented Reality for Enterprise Alliance, alongside OMG’s own Standards Development Organisation. This assembly of expertise spans a broad array of industries, each contributing to a deeper understanding and application of AI across different organisational contexts.
The working group will focus on aligning AI-related initiatives in four critical areas, each with a dedicated subgroup:
-
Standardisation and Semantics: This subgroup aims to investigate the role AI could play in standardisation processes. By gathering case studies specifically from the sectors of digital twins and extended reality, the subgroup will identify potential standardisation scenarios across both vertical and horizontal technological domains. In addition, they will delve into the application of AI and formal semantics in the integration of data, supportive of implementing FAIR—findable, accessible, interoperable, reusable—principles.
-
Interoperability and Intelligent Automation: Tasked with developing comprehensive frameworks, this subgroup’s work will cover interoperability, intelligent automation, and generative AI with agent-based systems. Their goal is to shape guidelines that foster the creation of intelligent, interoperable, trusted, and autonomous systems, identifying essential assets required and advocating for their industry use.
-
eXtended Reality (XR): This subgroup intends to explore the amalgamation of XR technologies, which include augmented reality (AR), virtual reality (VR), and mixed reality (MR), highlighting their intersection with AI. By focusing on this convergence, the group aims to unlock synergistic effects, leading to groundbreaking solutions and enhanced efficiency in operations.
-
Responsible AI: With an emphasis on ethical governance, this subgroup will craft a framework for responsible AI practices. It intends to review existing standards in AI, fostering appropriate ethical standards across varying degrees of industry maturity. A critical focus will be on developing a toolkit that not only supports current AI implementations but also integrates concepts of privacy, data provenance, and the upcoming evolution towards digital twin-based, multi-agent, autonomous AI systems.
This initiative by OMG underscores its commitment to advancing the capabilities of AI and its integration with other cutting-edge technologies. The goal is to leverage these technologies in ways that can sustainably propel industries forward through innovative practices and solutions.
For individuals and companies interested in participating or seeking more information, OMG offers the chance to join its consortium networks, including the AREA, DTC, and OMG SDO, to collaborate with leaders in the field.
