Jensen Huang, the CEO of Nvidia, has forecast an impending industrial revolution fuelled by artificial intelligence (AI), shifting away from previous revolutions driven by steam and electricity. His remarks were made during a presentation at the Gartner IT Symposium, where he outlined how AI is poised to redefine business operations and the nature of work.
At the heart of Huang’s vision is a fundamental transformation from traditional software development to AI-driven neural networks. Unlike conventional software, which focuses on tool utilisation, AI operates by learning to perform tasks autonomously, tackling intricate problems, and collaborating with other AI systems. This shift represents a pivotal moment for businesses, marking the emergence of digital intelligence as a new industry frontier.
Huang likened the rise of AI to the early days of software development, suggesting that AI will become as integral as software is today. He introduced the concept of AI “tokens”—outputs such as language, video, images, and even robotic actions that AI will generate and recombine, thus reshaping entire industries. Huang posits these tokens as a new type of currency, potentially leading to advances in fields such as artificial general robotics, where robots may eventually perform tasks via natural language commands.

Nvidia has incorporated AI into its own operations, leveraging it for tasks such as chip design and supply chain management. Looking towards the future, Huang predicted significant growth in AI-driven roles within Nvidia, foreseeing an organisation with 50,000 employees complemented by over 100 million AI assistants. He expressed confidence that a similar expansion of AI in the workforce would occur across various industries, highlighting the inevitable rise of AI-powered operations.
