The ongoing transformation of the telecom industry through Open Radio Access Networks (Open RAN) is detailed in a newly released white paper by 5G Americas, an influential trade organisation dedicated to the advancement of 5G and beyond within the Americas. Titled “Trends and Developments in Open RAN,” this document provides an in-depth examination of the latest advancements and ecosystem dynamics crucial for the evolution of telecommunications technology.

Mark Grayson, a Cisco Fellow and co-leader of the 5G Americas work group for the white paper, asserted that Open RAN is positively reshaping the mobile network landscape. This shift promotes the development of flexible, multi-vendor networks aimed at enhancing operational efficiencies and driving innovation within the industry. The report emphasises that the technology is transitioning from initial greenfield deployments to substantial integration within existing (brownfield) networks, enabling operators to leverage Open RAN within their current infrastructure. This integration is anticipated to reduce both capital and operational expenditures while enhancing network performance and scalability.

With over 50 Open RAN deployments reported across more than 20 countries, the technology is evidently redefining mobile connectivity on a global scale. The white paper highlights several key areas of development within Open RAN, including:

  1. Energy Efficiency: Feature advancements such as advanced sleep modes and selective channel activation have been introduced to reduce power consumption, thereby propelling network sustainability.

  2. Enhanced Beamforming: The introduction of Demodulation Reference Signal based Beamforming (DMRS-BF) is aimed at improving uplink performance and optimising fronthaul bandwidth usage, particularly in scenarios with limited capacity.

  3. Security Solutions: The emphasis on Zero Trust Architecture (ZTA) and the incorporation of MACsec encryption is pivotal in ensuring secure communication methods within fronthaul networks.

  4. New Use Cases: The adaptable nature of Open RAN is fostering new applications, including cloud automation and connectivity for enterprises, as well as the integration of Non-Terrestrial Networks (NTN) like satellites to bolster connectivity in remote and underserved regions.

  5. Maturation of RAN Technologies: The report acknowledges the growing importance of RAN Intelligent Controllers (RICs), which are enabling programmability through xApps and rApps. This functionality supports mobile network operators in dynamically managing and optimising network resources to meet changing user requirements.

  6. Ecosystem Expansion: The rapid growth of the Open RAN ecosystem encourages collaboration among chipset manufacturers, hardware providers, and system integrators, supported by global deployments and initiatives aimed at enhancing testing and interoperability. Key partnerships within this initiative include the O-RAN Alliance and ETSI, which are both bolstered by US government support.

The paper underscores 5G Americas’ commitment to bolstering the Open RAN ecosystem, as multiple stakeholders collectively work towards establishing a more versatile, secure, and harmonised global network environment. It also provides a forward-looking perspective on ongoing research conducted by the O-RAN ALLIANCE’s next Generation Research Group (nGRG), which is focused on establishing open and intelligent RAN principles essential for the anticipated sixth generation of mobile communications (6G).

Gaurav Sehgal, Senior Manager of Product Marketing at Mavenir and a contributor to 5G Americas, remarked on the technology’s potential to dismantle proprietary barriers and enhance cloud-native scalability, reflecting the telecom industry’s commitment to innovation. Similarly, Sanil Ramachandran, Director of Technology at Samsung Electronics America and co-leader of the Open RAN working group, stated that the interoperable design of Open RAN heralds a new era of innovation that benefits both operators and consumers.
