Microsoft is set to unveil a comprehensive redesign of its Teams application in November, aimed at enhancing productivity and collaboration through a unified chat and channels layout, alongside various new features.

Scheduled for a public preview in November, the redesign integrates chats, teams, and channels into a unified space under the ‘Chat’ area, simplifying the digital workspace for users across various platforms, including desktop, mobile, iOS, and Android.
Jeff Teper, President of Collaborative Apps and Platforms at Microsoft, expressed enthusiasm for the initiative in a recent blog post, highlighting the effort to streamline the user experience. He emphasised that the new design is both simple by default and powerful on demand, catering to diverse organisational preferences.
Key to the redesign is a self-service, guided onboarding flow that will assist users in personalising their experience. Users favouring a separate view for chats and channels will have the flexibility to switch between integrated or distinct layouts, with adjustments possible at any time without needing IT assistance.
Among the notable features introduced in this update is the “@mentions” view, which consolidates user-specific messages into a single accessible location. This feature addresses the common issue of overlooked important conversations. Additionally, new filters are set to enhance message organisation, enabling users to focus on current priorities, such as unread messages, while excluding muted or non-critical conversations.
The release also introduces the Copilot meeting recap feature, allowing users to catch up on meeting discussions asynchronously. Enhanced customisation is a significant aspect of the new experience, permitting users to configure their workspace according to their specific requirements. This includes the ability to create custom sections with chats, channels, meetings, and other components, facilitating centralised access to project-related communications.
Further enhancements include a redesigned favourites section, which will automatically organise users’ pinned chats and channels from previous settings. Users can also effortlessly initiate conversations with a new message option and navigate frequently used chats and channels with improved shortcut commands.
Looking ahead, Microsoft is poised to further boost collaboration with the introduction of threaded conversations, which will undergo customer testing within the current quarter. Broad availability is anticipated by mid-2025. Additionally, the integration of Outlook’s new Calendar application into Teams, bringing AI-powered productivity enhancements, is expected to be generally available by January 2025, with early access starting in November.
These design innovations underscore Microsoft’s commitment to refining the collaborative capabilities of Teams, adapting to the evolving needs of its users, and enhancing efficiency within hybrid and AI-driven work environments.
