Meta Platforms Inc. is rolling out its AI assistant, Meta AI, to 43 countries, enhancing user experience with innovative features while emphasising privacy and user control.
Meta AI Expands Global Reach as Innovative Features Redefine Social Media Interaction
Menlo Park, California – Meta Platforms Inc., the parent company of leading social media platforms Facebook, Instagram, WhatsApp, and Messenger, has embarked on an extensive global rollout of its artificial intelligence assistant, Meta AI. Announced in late September 2023 during Meta Connect 2023, this AI integration marks a new chapter in enhancing user experience through AI-powered functionalities, reaching a significant milestone with its expansion to 43 countries globally.
Initial Launch and Subsequent Expansion
Since its initial debut in the United States in September 2023, Meta AI has been strategically expanded. In April 2024, Meta broadened its reach to include countries such as Australia, Canada, and several nations across Africa and the Caribbean. The company underscored this as the beginning of a broader international strategy.
By October 9, 2024, Meta AI had been introduced to an additional 21 markets. Key locales included the United Kingdom, Brazil, and several countries in Latin America and Asia, including the Philippines and Vietnam. This expansion was coupled with the announcement of language support for Tagalog, Arabic, Thai, and Vietnamese, reflecting Meta’s ambition to cater to a diverse global audience.
Innovative Features and Capabilities
Meta AI encompasses a variety of features tailored to enhance interactions across Meta’s suite of platforms. Key functionalities include:
-
Image Generation: Meta AI allows users to create images from text prompts, a feature now available across Facebook and Instagram for use in feeds, stories, and profile pictures.
-
AI-Generated Content in Feeds: Currently in testing phases, this feature personalises user feeds with AI-generated images reflective of individual interests, with the potential for incorporating user likenesses.
-
Chatbot Functionality: Users can engage with Meta AI through a chatbot, assisting in generating content ideas and providing interactive responses to queries.
-
Integrated Search Tools: With the integration of Meta AI into the search features across its platforms, users can access real-time information and content suggestions without leaving their apps.
-
Voice Commands: The AI responds to voice prompts, with a feature allowing responses in celebrity voices. Though popular celebrities like Dame Judi Dench and John Cena have lent their voices to this feature, as of late October 2024, it remains unavailable in the UK market.
Privacy and User Control
Meta has placed emphasis on transparency and user autonomy regarding AI integration. For UK users, publicly shared posts on Facebook and Instagram may be used to train AI models, though private messages and content from minors remain exempt from this usage. Additionally, users can opt out of having their content used for AI training through an objection form, and can modify privacy settings to control data visibility.
While Meta strives for transparency, the inability to opt out of all AI interactions remains a topic of active discussion among users and privacy advocates.
Current User Engagement
Currently, Meta reports that its AI assistant serves over 400 million people globally, with a notable 185 million users actively engaging on a weekly basis. With the intention to become the world’s most utilised AI assistant by the end of 2024, Meta targets reaching close to 500 million monthly active users.
As Meta AI continues to develop and integrate into everyday digital interactions, its reach and influence over social media dynamics will continue to be an area of keen interest for observers and stakeholders worldwide.
