Members of the Pajarito Environmental Education Center’s Nature Youth Group achieve top honours at the NeurIPS conference, demonstrating the impactful use of AI to tackle environmental challenges.

Members of the Pajarito Environmental Education Center (PEEC) Nature Youth Group have garnered international recognition for their innovative use of Artificial Intelligence (AI), emerging as one of the top winners at NeurIPS, a highly esteemed global AI conference. The nature-focused youth group demonstrated exceptional creativity and social awareness through their project, which was among the four victorious teams out of 335 entries worldwide, placing them in an elite category of the top 1% of participants.

The accolade not only includes a monetary reward but also offers a unique opportunity for one team member to present at the upcoming NeurIPS conference scheduled to be held in Vancouver in December 2024. Aditya Viswanathan, a pivotal founding member of the PEEC Nature Youth Group, will represent his peers at the conference, showcasing their groundbreaking work and receiving the award.

The team consists of motivated young minds including Adis Bock, Zoe Bent, Tate Plohr, Suchir Jha, Celia Pesiri, Sebastian Koglin, and Phoebe Reid, all of whom contributed to the development of an AI system aimed at mitigating human-wildlife conflicts in their local area. This achievement underscores the potential of AI in addressing environmental issues and fostering harmonious human-wildlife coexistence.

The PEEC Nature Youth Group, established only a year ago, seeks to bridge the gap between high school students, laboratory scientists, and local experts to tackle environmental challenges within the community. Their educational programs target young adults aged 14 to 19 and beyond, aiming to foster ecological awareness and leadership skills.

In line with the mission of the PEEC, these initiatives strive to strengthen community ties across Northern New Mexico by nurturing a connection with the region’s natural landscapes, including its canyons, mesas, mountains, and skies. The group’s endeavours encapsulate PEEC’s commitment to enriching community life through an appreciation and understanding of the local environment.
