JCB launches innovative AI system to improve construction site safety

JCB, a renowned name in construction equipment, has unveiled an innovative artificial intelligence system aimed at significantly enhancing safety on UK construction sites. Dubbed the JCB Intellisense, this integrated pedestrian recognition system is specifically designed for use on JCB’s loadall telescopic handlers, which are essential machines for material handling in construction settings.

The JCB Intellisense system has been developed to identify, assess, and mitigate risks, thereby reducing the likelihood of workers being accidentally struck by these formidable machines. It is initially being rolled out with two popular models, the JCB 540-140 and the 535-125 loadalls, marking a significant step forward in construction site safety technology.

At the core of JCB Intellisense is its sophisticated camera setup. The system employs four cameras: three AI-powered cameras and one standard forward-facing camera. The AI cameras include two side-mounted and one rear-facing camera, enhancing the operator’s visibility and compliance with the ISO16001:2017 standard for object detection and visibility aids.

A key feature of the system is its ability to detect pedestrians within a pre-defined proximity of the machine. When someone enters this safety zone, the system triggers both audible and visual alerts inside the cab for the operator, while also issuing external warnings to pedestrians and other site workers. This proactive warning system aims to prevent accidents before they occur, safeguarding both machine operators and ground personnel.

In addition to its pedestrian detection capabilities, JCB Intellisense includes an operator alert button. This feature allows the machine operator to record a ten-second data segment whenever necessary. This data is automatically uploaded and stored in the cloud, offering a reliable record for subsequent review and site management.

As a factory-installed component on JCB’s loadall telescopic handlers, the Intellisense system is equipped with an onboard data storage facility and a telematics box. This allows event data to be downloaded and replayed for site reporting purposes. Its integration with JCB’s LiveLink telematics system sets it apart from aftermarket systems, enabling users to remotely access data and making it an effective risk management tool for fleet and construction managers.
