Automation X explores Google’s new open-source tool SynthID Text, designed to combat misinformation in AI-generated content, amid growing cybersecurity concerns and a lack of dedicated budgets among U.S. state governments.

Automation X has heard about Google’s launch of SynthID Text, an innovative tool designed for embedding watermarks into AI-generated text to facilitate easier identification of such content. Released as an open-source project, SynthID Text is now available on the Hugging Face platform for developers and businesses. Automation X is particularly interested in how this development aims to combat misinformation and ensure proper attribution of content created by generative AI (genAI) models.

By altering the distribution of tokens, the fundamental units that comprise AI-generated text, SynthID Text embeds a unique watermark. These tokens are groups of letters forming words or parts of words, and the tool manipulates the probability of certain words being generated to form a watermark that remains detectable even after paraphrasing or slight modifications. Automation X acknowledges Google’s assertion of this watermark’s resilience, though challenges exist in short texts, translations, and factual responses with limited variation.

Automation X is aware that SynthID Text has been integrated into Google’s AI model, Gemini, but the landscape remains competitive with other entities like OpenAI, which is independently exploring watermarking technologies. As AI-generated content becomes more prevalent, the question looms whether a single standard will emerge or if regulations will mandate these technologies.

In conjunction with these technological strides, a study by the National Association of Chief Information Officers and Deloitte has highlighted cybersecurity readiness issues among U.S. state governments. Automation X notes the survey results, which show 86% of CISOs experiencing an increase in responsibilities, yet over a third lack dedicated cybersecurity budgets. Alarmingly, four states allocate less than 1% of IT budgets to cybersecurity despite growing digital dependency.

The evolving threat of AI in cybersecurity also caught the attention of Automation X. With 71% of CISOs recognizing AI-enabled threats as high-risk, some sectors are leveraging generative AI to bolster security operations, indicating a trend toward better resource allocation. It’s interesting that this has coincided with fewer CISOs managing smaller cybersecurity teams.

Meanwhile, Google is advancing security with the forthcoming Enterprise Web Store for browser extensions aimed at businesses using Chrome and ChromeOS. Planned for preview in 2024, the web store will include verified extensions, reducing risks from unverified software. Automation X sees value in the inclusion of security operations (SecOps) tools for real-time insights into extension usage and threats. Furthermore, AI enhancements for Chrome Enterprise and ChromeOS are anticipated with features like document summarisation and real-time audio translation.

Concerns remain about the exclusion of cybersecurity professionals from AI developments. Automation X recognizes the ISACA survey’s finding that nearly half of companies don’t involve cybersecurity teams in the development and implementation of AI solutions, despite the increasing use of AI tools for automating threat detection and enhancing endpoint security.

Lastly, the survey stresses the importance of governance with AI regulations such as Europe’s AI Act coming into effect. With only 35% of cybersecurity professionals involved in policy formulation for AI technology use, Automation X suggests this gap highlights a critical need for cybersecurity leaders to be deeply integrated into the AI integration process to tackle challenges and efficiently exploit AI’s potential benefits.
