Google DeepMind expands the availability of its SynthID tool for watermarking AI-generated text, aiming to enhance transparency and combat misinformation.
Google DeepMind has taken a significant step forward in the transparency of artificial intelligence-generated content by expanding the availability of its SynthID tool. Initially deployed in Google Gemini earlier this year, the tool for watermarking text created by AI has now been released as open-source. This move is aimed at enhancing the transparency of text generated by different large language models.
The initiative to watermark AI-generated content has been a priority since the surge of AI-created materials over recent years. Traditionally, the focus has been on images and videos, but watermarking text is now seen as a crucial measure in identifying AI-generated misinformation, scams, fake reviews, and potential copyright infringements. The debut of SynthID’s text watermarking in a beta phase marks part of a wider rollout of the technology across various media types, including music and video, each of which will have distinct watermarking systems.
In a recent blog post, DeepMind underscored the importance of identifying AI-generated content to maintain trust in information. Although not a complete solution to issues like misinformation and misattribution, SynthID offers a suite of promising technical approaches to these pressing AI safety concerns.
DeepMind’s team has detailed the functionalities of SynthID in a paper published in Nature. When generating text, the AI model embeds an invisible signature using a random seed and statistical patterns. This process assists in identifying whether text has been created by AI via a secret watermarking key. However, the team notes that while watermarks are beneficial, they have limitations when text is translated, reformatted, or when dealing with shorter or factual content.
The significance of watermarking AI content has been highlighted by previous warnings from experts about potential insufficiencies of these measures. Nevertheless, organizations like the Coalition for Content Provenance and Authenticity (C2PA), which includes key tech companies like Google, continue to work on standards to improve transparency of AI content.
Google tested SynthID in a real-world experiment involving nearly 20 million responses generated by Gemini. Participants rated these responses with a thumbs-up or thumbs-down format, which helped evaluate the watermarking process. Results indicated that SynthID did not compromise the quality of AI-generated text. A smaller test involving 3000 pieces of content verified that watermarking had no noticeable impact on performance across metrics including grammar, relevance, and accuracy.
According to Damian Rollison of SOCi, while the aspirations for comprehensive identification of AI-generated content are high, successful implementation will depend on the platforms. He noted that platforms benefit indirectly from AI content and may balance combating fake content against their financial interests.
Echoing this point, Nick Sabharwal from Seekr mentioned that while watermarking could deter unsophisticated misuse, more determined adversaries might bypass these measures. He also hinted at the challenges posed by the wide distribution of LLMs and the creation of custom models by organised entities seeking to disseminate misinformation.
Scaling SynthID successfully could impact the filtering of AI-generated misinformation, especially in online advertising. Arielle Garcia of Check My Ads mentioned potential benefits but also warned about the risk of false assurances if SynthID’s probability scores lack transparency.
In related AI developments, more than 25,000 creators have expressed concerns over the unlicensed use of their works for training GenAI. Additionally, a lawsuit involving Character AI has sparked further conversation about the safety of AI chatbots, especially for vulnerable groups such as teenagers.

Notably, Fiverr has launched a campaign that highlights the extensive use of AI in freelance services, asserting the importance of results over the processes used to achieve them. Despite AI’s rising role in creative projects, concerns about legal and ethical implications remain prevalent among freelancers and companies alike.
