Google commits $5.8 million to boost AI skills in sub-Saharan Africa

Google has made a significant commitment to advance artificial intelligence (AI) skills development across sub-Saharan Africa, announcing a $5.8 million investment aimed at empowering individuals and organisations within the region. The initiative is designed to leverage AI technologies for economic and social growth, addressing the needs of workers, educators, nonprofit leaders, and governmental bodies.

This development comes as part of Google’s broader strategy outlined in their report, “The Digital Opportunity of Sub-Saharan Africa”, which highlights the potential of AI-driven initiatives to significantly contribute to the region’s economic growth. The report projects that these initiatives could add up to $30 billion to sub-Saharan Africa’s economy by 2030.

Google’s investment will be directed towards various programmes facilitating AI knowledge and skill development. These programmes will help workers acquire essential AI competencies, educate teenagers about the ethical and safe use of AI, and assist nonprofit leaders in integrating AI into their operations. Additionally, there will be support for government officials, equipping them with AI skills necessary for effective policy-making and the delivery of enhanced public services.

The announcement highlights the success of previous beneficiaries of Google’s AI-related funding. Among them is Jacaranda Health in Kenya, which uses an AI-powered platform to send critical text alerts to new and expectant mothers, reducing complications and potentially saving lives. Another recipient, AirQo in Uganda, applies AI technology to address air pollution issues, thus improving overall air quality.

Matt Brittin, Google’s president of business and operations in Europe, the Middle East, and Africa, expressed optimism about the impact of these initiatives. In a blog post, Brittin stated, “Africa stands to accelerate its growth through AI as more people gain connectivity and harness technology for good.” He lauded the new generation of African innovators who are using technology to tackle some of the globe’s most pressing challenges, thereby building a promising future for their communities.

This funding commitment reflects Google’s strategy to not only expand AI education and capabilities in sub-Saharan Africa but also to empower the region’s population to create durable, tech-enabled solutions for various socioeconomic issues.
