GE Aerospace and Waygate Technologies have launched an innovative AI-driven borescope solution aimed at transforming commercial aviation engine inspections, improving speed, accuracy and reliability.

GE Aerospace, in collaboration with Waygate Technologies, a subsidiary of Baker Hughes, has unveiled a state-of-the-art AI-assisted borescope solution aimed at revolutionising the inspection of commercial aviation engines. This new technology, which harnesses the power of Artificial Intelligence to enhance defect recognition, represents the inaugural product to emerge from the Joint Technology Development Agreement the companies entered into back in May 2023.

The AI-driven tool, focused on Assisted Defect Recognition (ADR) technology, is designed to address the often time-consuming and meticulous task of High Pressure Compressor (HPC) inspections. Such inspections are a crucial component in the Maintenance, Repair, and Overhaul (MRO) of aviation engines, ensuring their reliability and operational safety. Nicole Jenkins, who serves as the Chief MRO Engineer at GE Aerospace, discussed the impact of this innovation, stating, “At GE Aerospace, we increasingly are seeing the value AI technologies are bringing to help improve the speed, accuracy, and reliability of commercial jet engine inspections.”

This advancement aims to integrate smoothly into the existing MRO processes for GE’s GEnx and CFM LEAP engine models. By equipping inspection engineers with cutting-edge tools that incorporate AI, computer vision, and automation, GE Aerospace strives to significantly enhance productivity while adhering to the stringent standards expected by their clientele. The new borescope solution is anticipated not only to streamline inspections by reducing the time required but also to improve the precision in identifying potential defects.

The introduction of the AI-assisted borescope is expected to be a game-changer for Waygate customers and within GE’s own MRO network. Once deployed, the tool is likely to bring noticeable improvements in the efficiency and dependability of engine inspections, providing an important upgrade in the aerospace industry’s technical capabilities.
