The rise of AI among freelancers in 2024 is transforming workflows, with a significant number reporting an increase in income and productivity.
In 2024, the utilisation of artificial intelligence (AI) within the freelance market has seen a significant rise, reflecting a broader trend of professionals leveraging technology to optimise their workflows and increase their income. As reported by MBO Partners, an increasing number of freelancers, now pegged at around one in five, are earning $100,000 or more annually. A noteworthy proportion of this freelance workforce comprises part-timers managing side hustles in addition to their primary employment. This shift towards independent work coincides with the growing incorporation of AI technologies into their daily operations.
The MBO Partners report indicates an impressive increase in the adoption of AI among freelancers, rising from 37% in 2023 to 65% in 2024. The impact of this technological embrace appears to be largely positive, with many freelancers expressing that AI both complements and enhances their professional output. A reported 69% of independents find AI extremely or very helpful, a significant increase from 51% the previous year. Furthermore, 95% of those using generative AI (GenAI) claim it provides them with a competitive edge, and 66% note an improvement in productivity and efficiency due to AI.
AI’s influence is particularly prevalent in three main areas of freelancing: writing, research, and creative tasks. Specific AI tools like ChatGPT and Grammarly are popular among writers for drafting and editing content, producing SEO-optimised material, and developing engaging social media content. Freelancers are utilising these tools to expedite the content creation process, allowing them to handle larger workloads without sacrificing quality.
In research, AI assists in competitive analysis, data collection, and market trend evaluation. Tools that automate and simplify these tasks enable freelancers to focus more on strategic decision-making and less on time-consuming data management. They can perform SWOT analyses and explore market gaps with increased precision.
When it comes to creative tasks, AI plays a vital role in brainstorming, campaign ideation, and content production. Freelancers can use AI to generate script outlines, refine video editing, or even assist with programming tasks essential for developing apps or establishing a web presence. The capacity to automate and enhance these creative processes allows freelancers to innovate and expand their service offerings.
This rise in AI use among freelancers is not only indicative of technological advancement but also reflects a shift in workforce dynamics, where flexibility and technological competence are increasingly valued. As AI tools continue to evolve and integrate into various industries, they are expected to further empower freelancers in enhancing their efficiency and expanding their income potential in the competitive freelance market of 2024.
