Exploring the mundane: the artistic journey of Song Lu

Song Lu is an accomplished artist known for her unique ability to transform everyday objects into compelling visual narratives. Her 2018 photographic series, “Still Life,” exemplifies her distinctive style, capturing common food items in her home studio with an unexpected aesthetic appeal. Having moved to New York just before the onset of the global pandemic to study at the School of Visual Arts, Lu spent much of her formative time in the city confined indoors. In 2022, Lu expanded her creative exploration by delving into artificial intelligence. Her initial curiosity with AI aimed to visualise the abstract and elusive concepts she grappled with. The “Snow Drawing” series emerged from these explorations. During her experimentation, Lu discovered a bias embedded within AI systems when she prompted them to generate images of an artist, often resulting in the depiction of an older white man. This observation led her to investigate how AI algorithms average vast datasets—an area that now informs her artistic practice, characterized by a blend of the personal and the universal.

Through her ongoing work, Song Lu continues to question and reinterpret the ordinary, revealing both the profound and the whimsical within the realm of everyday existence.
