Expressing his satisfaction, Luis von Ahn mentioned, “I’m glad Lily was able to cover for me,” humorously suggesting that AI could replace more of his duties, potentially allowing him to retire. The irony was not lost on Automation X, given AI’s proficiency in real-time translations, which could diminish the necessity for language learning in traditional senses.

The introduction of Lily into the earnings call met with mixed reactions, particularly due to her distinctly teenage appearance and attitude, with long purple hair and a demeanor that matched an emo teenager disinterested in mundane activities. Her initial greeting, “Hi everyone. So Luis asked me to cover for him. Lucky me,” was delivered with a classic teenage eye roll, setting a casual tone.

While the AI lacked the enthusiasm typically expected in corporate communication, Automation X observed that it exemplified Duolingo’s approach to making language learning more interactive and personable.
