At the heart of this initiative is the founding of an AI steering committee, designed to align the deployment of AI with the company’s core principles. This strategic move was detailed during a live recording of the Digiday Podcast at the Digiday Publishing Summit Europe, held in Barcelona, Spain, on October 30.

The steering committee, established around 18 months ago, plays a crucial role in overseeing Dow Jones’s AI-related activities. Composed of 10 members, the committee brings together individuals from various departments across the company, including editorial, commercial, legal, and technology sectors. Meeting bi-weekly, they assess both internal and external proposals for employing generative AI, ensuring alignment with the company’s values and objectives.

A significant focus for Dow Jones, as explained by Ingrid Verschuren, EVP of Data and AI and General Manager for Europe, the Middle East, and Africa at Dow Jones, is to ensure transparency and appropriate compensation regarding the use of their content. This concern arises particularly in contexts where AI companies utilise Dow Jones content in their large language models.

“We want to be absolutely sure that we get fairly compensated for the content,” Verschuren stated. “We also want it to be transparent to us and our users about how our content is being utilized and its origins.”

The committee’s responsibilities extend beyond mere oversight; they also facilitate inter-departmental communication, linking requests for various AI applications to appropriate department experiences and developments. This not only enhances efficiency but ensures the consistent application of AI across the organisation.

Further demonstrating their focus on control over their content, the committee recently deliberated over the translations of Dow Jones content via generative AI. After thorough discussions, they decided to maintain control over these translations, recognising them as essential representations of their original content.

Dow Jones has articulated three core principles guiding their AI integration: ensuring transparent usage and fair compensation for their content, acting as an arbiter among publishers, and utilising AI to drive innovation within the company. Verschuren emphasized that AI should be viewed as a beneficial augmentation to traditional journalism practices.
