Detroit Metropolitan Wayne County Airport is implementing TKH Security’s Park Assist system to enhance parking operations and improve the passenger experience.
Detroit Metropolitan Wayne County Airport (DTW), one of the largest airports in the world, is set to enhance its parking operations through the implementation of TKH Security’s Park Assist system. This automated parking guidance solution aims to streamline the experience for millions of passengers, particularly during busy travel periods like the holiday season.
Installation of the Park Assist system will cover DTW’s extensive parking facilities, which include the McNamara Parking Garage, the Big Blue deck, and several adjacent surface lots. The new system is expected to monitor approximately 18,000 parking spaces, providing drivers with real-time updates on availability and locations of parked vehicles.
Chad Newton, CEO of the Wayne County Airport Authority, commented on the deployment, stating, “At Detroit Metropolitan Wayne County Airport, we operate one of the largest parking areas in the world totalling more than 18,000 on-airport spaces. We trust our customers will experience the benefits of the user-friendly (Find Your Car) app helping them to find available spaces and their parked vehicles upon return. This is one more innovative step we are taking to improve the passenger experience at DTW.”
The technology behind the Park Assist system is centred on the M5 smart sensor, which enables operators to monitor parking spaces with around-the-clock HD video streaming capabilities. Each sensor is equipped with two CMOS digital cameras that can oversee up to six spaces at once, boasting an accuracy rate of over 99%. Additional features include a full-spectrum RGB LED indicator that offers a variety of colours to signal parking availability, helping to guide drivers more efficiently.
Coley Nash, the Northeast regional sales executive for TKH Security, highlighted the project’s suitability for their expertise, remarking, “Our ability to customise solutions to meet the unique challenges of large-scale, complex facilities like DTW made this project an ideal match for our expertise. We are proud to partner with the Wayne County Airport Authority to deliver a quick and stress-free parking experience to their passengers.”
This modernisation initiative builds on previous advancements at DTW, which included the introduction of facial recognition technology by US Customs and Border Protection in 2019. This biometric entry-exit system helps expedite the arrivals and departures of international travellers by employing facial comparison technology, streamlining the security process at the airport.
As DTW continues to embrace innovation and automation in its operations, the integration of the Park Assist system is anticipated to significantly improve operational efficiency and enhance the overall experience for passengers navigating the airport’s extensive parking facilities.
