Danske Bank is investing in digital services and technology to strengthen its support for the Northern Irish business community while ensuring a personalised customer experience.
Danske Bank, a longstanding financial institution in Northern Ireland, is undergoing a significant digital transformation to enhance its services for both business and personal clients. Although the bank has operated under the Danske Bank brand for over a decade, it remains deeply rooted in its local origins, maintaining a locally based chief executive, executive committee, and independent board focused on fostering growth in the region.
Shaun McAnee, Managing Director of Corporate and Business Banking, highlights the bank’s ongoing commitment to supporting the Northern Irish business landscape. “We bank around 50% of the Top 100 locally managed Northern Ireland businesses,” McAnee states, illustrating the bank’s substantial influence and reach within the community. Danske Bank has lent over £500 million to the Northern Ireland business community this year, underscoring its pivotal role in facilitating business expansion and job creation.
A team of about 80 business relationship managers, backed by 30 product specialists and 24 branches, underpins Danske Bank’s business operations. This extensive network allows the bank to cater to a wide array of business sizes, from micro-businesses to large corporations. The bank’s local contact centre in Dunmurry also plays a crucial role in supporting business clients.
A significant focus of Danske Bank’s operations is the enhancement of digital services, which are increasingly essential as customer expectations evolve. Liam Curran, the bank’s Chief Information Officer, leads a team of approximately 140 technology and digital development professionals in Northern Ireland. This team includes data scientists, analytics engineers, and IT specialists dedicated to enhancing customer experiences through technology.
Danske Bank is embracing advanced technologies such as artificial intelligence (AI) and cloud computing to improve its digital offerings. This year, the bank has focused heavily on data to personalise customer interactions and improve digital engagement. Over 80% of personal customers now utilise digital platforms. The bank’s proprietary platform for business clients, known as District, offers a highly customisable experience tailored to individual business needs.
The introduction of technologies such as their internally developed Danske Bank GPT platform has also been transformative. This platform is actively used by hundreds of employees in Northern Ireland, contributing to the efficiency of the bank’s internal processes. Innovations in digital onboarding have led to the acquisition of over 13,000 new personal accounts and 1,000 new small business accounts in 2024 alone.
Curran points out how digitisation has also improved internal efficiencies, with over 200,000 hours of administrative tasks automated and 100 robots being implemented across the bank to assist in streamlining operations. These advances not only make banking more accessible for customers but also allow bank employees more time to engage directly with clients.
Looking toward the future, Danske Bank Group plans further investments in its technology infrastructure, including the introduction of cloud technologies and new partner platforms. Shaun McAnee views technology as an enabling force that complements the human expertise and local leadership that remain at the core of Danske’s operations.
These efforts place Danske Bank in a strong position to remain a key player in Northern Ireland’s financial sector, providing seamless, tech-driven solutions while maintaining deeply rooted local ties.
