Based in the UK, Burgopak specialises in creating practical packaging solutions with an eco-friendly approach. Whitehurst has an extensive background with prominent companies, such as Google, Samsung, Unilever, and Sony, which adds to his design credentials.

Whitehurst’s journey in design began after he completed a Masters in Industrial Design at Central Saint Martins, which significantly shaped his career and design philosophy. This particular course proved to be a pivotal moment for Whitehurst, providing him with the foundational skills and inspiration necessary for his future endeavours. His initial career trajectory, however, took an unexpected turn towards packaging design due to a serendipitous opportunity, which ultimately led to a longstanding career with Burgopak spanning over 17 years.

His response to a personal query from his daughter on Earth Day, regarding what he was doing to help the planet, highlighted the need for more action towards environmental preservation. The company overhauled its materials, received FSC certification, and developed a Life Cycle Analysis (LCA) tool for measuring environmental impact.

One exemplary sustainable project involved redesigning Monzo bank’s card packaging. By adjusting the size of the packaging, Burgopak managed to increase efficiency and reduce material wastage, saving significant amounts of paper and CO2 emissions. This practical application of sustainable practices not only benefited the environment but also helped in reducing costs for clients.

In terms of challenges faced, Whitehurst recounts tackling issues related to postal systems. For fintech clients that send cards via post, he and his team devised the Burgopak Super Envelope range to address mailing complexities in markets like the US, effectively optimizing logistics and costs.

Looking to the future, Whitehurst envisions further advancements in creating sustainable packaging solutions. He believes substantial progress in the packaging industry will require cooperation between businesses, consumers, and governments to enhance awareness and communication regarding environmental impacts.
