The GoTech World 2024 conference in Bucharest brought together industry leaders and experts to discuss the future of technology, featuring keynote speaker Kevin Gaskell and highlighting Romania’s potential in the digital economy.
Bucharest hosted the GoTech World 2024 conference at the Romexpo exhibition centre from November 12-13, showcasing cutting-edge technology and innovation across various sectors. The event gathered over 14,482 participants last attended by industry professionals, with the notable keynote speaker being Kevin Gaskell, renowned former CEO of luxury car manufacturers Porsche, Lamborghini, and BMW. Gaskell presented to a standing-room only audience, sharing insights from his extensive leadership experience, particularly during times of organisational distress.
Gaskell highlighted his pivotal role at Porsche, where he navigated the company from an imminent bankruptcy to a flourishing brand within five years. At the time, Porsche faced significant challenges, including a staggering 90% drop in sales and a surplus of inventory that equated to three years of production. Under his leadership, Gaskell transformed the customer experience, realigning the company towards a more consumer-focused model. By implementing rigorous changes in logistics, marketing, and product development, alongside intensive staff training inspired by luxury hospitality standards, Porsche elevated its customer experience ranking from last to first in the industry.
His approach involved a drastic restructuring, including a significant reduction in staff within the first weeks of assuming leadership. This bold tactic was part of his broader framework for organisational transformation, which he encapsulated in a three-step strategy: commit, connect, and create. Gaskell emphasised the necessity for staff to feel a personal connection to the brand, advocating for immersive experiences such as team driving events to foster engagement.
During his tenure at BMW, Gaskell was tasked with a modest growth target of just 4% annually. However, through the application of the same principles he used at Porsche, he achieved a remarkable 500% increase in profitability over four years. His insights underscored the importance of simplicity in strategy; while complex technical solutions are often identified as essential, he urged the necessity of a focused approach that prioritises actions that deliver measurable value.
The conference, now in its 13th edition, served as a prominent platform for discussing emerging technologies poised to reshape business practices, particularly in the context of ongoing digital transformation. Organised by Universum Expo, GoTech World featured 91 partner companies, 125 speakers from diverse backgrounds, and more than 60 hours of dedicated content, marking its significance as Central and Eastern Europe’s largest B2B IT and digital solutions expo.
One of the key themes discussed was the potential of automation driven by advanced technologies. Bogdan Dumea, State Secretary at the Ministry of Research, Innovation, and Digitalisation, remarked on Romania’s capacity to grow its digital economy to €50 billion by 2030, with substantial potential for automation across various job sectors, including governmental administrative roles, where automation could rise to 70%. This potential aligns with strategies being developed to bolster the human capital of small and medium-sized enterprises through investments aimed at integrating new technologies.
The event also hosted the inaugural Smart Home Summit, which brought together industry leaders in home automation, demonstrating the burgeoning interest in smart technology. This summit provided a platform for discussing advancements in energy efficiency and the Internet of Things (IoT), signalling the sector’s expansive growth potential.
Overall, GoTech World 2024 not only highlighted past successes but also showcased the trajectory for future technological developments within businesses, positioning Romania as a potential leader in the rapidly evolving digital landscape.
