The VMware Explore conference in Barcelona has introduced key product updates, including generative AI in security solutions and enhancements in cloud and data services.

Barcelona Hosts VMware Explore Conference with Significant Product Announcements

Barcelona, Spain – The annual VMware Explore conference, historically a stage for notable product updates, has once again proven to be a significant event for tech enthusiasts and industry insiders. Held in the vibrant city of Barcelona, this year’s conference has uncovered several notable updates, particularly the inclusion of generative AI within VMware’s security portfolio.

Generative AI in Security Solutions

The most highlighted addition this year concerns VMware’s vDefend, formerly known as NSX Security Solutions, which now incorporates generative AI technology. This integration introduces “Intelligent Assist,” a feature designed to enhance the operation and effectiveness of security within the vDefend suite. The suite provides multiple layers of protection, including a Distributed Firewall (DFW) for micro-segmentation, a gateway firewall, and a distributed Intrusion Detection and Prevention System (IDPS).

“Intelligent Assist” aims to offer a natural language interface that supplies “explainability, actionable insights, and automated responses for high-priority alerts.” This feature is expected to benefit virtualization, network security, and security operation centre teams by providing detailed contextual information about active threats and their potential impact. Additionally, it provides guidance for remediation steps, which can be executed efficiently.

To further bolster threat detection capabilities, vDefend will now support the ingestion of signatures from third-party Intrusion Detection Systems (IDS) and Intrusion Prevention Systems (IPS), as well as data created by customers themselves. This development can broaden the scope of threat detection, offering a more expansive appraisal of potential security threats.

Potential Rebranding

There are also indications, based on whispers from informed sources, that VMware plans to rebrand further products. The moniker “NSX Security Solutions” may just be the start, with names such as “VMware Virtual Networks” potentially coming into use, replacing existing nomenclatures.

Enhancements in Load Balancing and Data Services

Alongside security enhancements, VMware announced an update to its Avi Load Balancer to improve handling of Kubernetes environments at scale. Furthermore, the VMware Cloud Foundation suite has been augmented with “VMware Tanzu Data Services.” This integration will incorporate leading open-source data services, including PostgreSQL, MySQL, RabbitMQ, and Valkey, into the private cloud suite. The VMware by Broadcom team will provide support for these tools, enabling the automation of various data service lifecycle processes like deployment, backups, clustering, security patching, and updates.

Expanding Cloud and Certification Opportunities

The conference also brought news of expanded cloud capabilities, with the Google Cloud VMware Engine designated as a target recovery environment for VMware Cloud Foundation workloads, a status previously exclusive to AWS.

Additionally, members of the VMware User Group (VMUG) have a new incentive. The VMUG Advantage program now offers a 50 percent discount on certification exams for the VMware Certified Professional (VCP) and VMware Certified Advanced Professional (VCAP) credentials. Successful candidates will earn a free personal use license for VMware Cloud Foundation, valid for three years. This offer, which surpasses previous VMUG deals, aims to cultivate a skilled talent pool, benefiting both users and the wider industry.

VMUG Advantage membership is priced at $210 annually and currently includes additional benefits such as a 20 percent exam discount and non-commercial licenses viable for up to a year, often utilised for home labs and non-production environments.

As the conference concludes, these announcements mark significant advancements in VMware’s product lineup, underscoring the company’s commitment to innovation and strategic partnerships in the tech landscape.
