The latest software update for iPhones is scheduled for release next week on October 28, 2023, offering a blend of groundbreaking technologies that promise to further personalise and enhance Apple’s ecosystem.
Originally introduced at this year’s Worldwide Developers Conference (WWDC), Apple Intelligence is a suite of capabilities infused with generative AI. It aims to significantly upgrade applications within Apple’s ecosystem, providing a more tailored and capable user experience.
The launch of iOS 18.1 will coincide with updates for other Apple operating systems, including iPadOS 18.1 and macOS Sequoia 15.1. Although the initial release will not include all the long-awaited features such as Genmojis or a fully revamped Siri, iOS 18.1 will come with a variety of productivity tools powered by AI. These include proofreading and rewriting facilities, summarisation tools for emails and webpages, smart replies in Mail and Messages, and notification summaries.
In addition to text-related innovations, iOS 18.1 offers impressive media enhancements. Users will be able to extract unwanted elements from images, mirroring functionalities seen in competitor products like Google’s Magic Editor. There’s also the introduction of phone call recording and the ability to create “Memory movies” from photos using brief descriptions.
Apple has confirmed that Apple Intelligence will be compatible with its more recent devices that house the latest A17 Pro and A18+ chipsets. Specific models include the Apple iPhone 15 Pro, 15 Pro Max, 16, 16 Plus, 16 Pro, and 16 Pro Max, making these devices the only ones currently able to leverage the new AI features.
However, accessing these novel capabilities will come with some logistical considerations. Upon the public release of iOS 18.1, users may face a queue to activate the Apple Intelligence features due to potentially high demand. To join this queue, one can navigate to the ‘Apple Intelligence & Siri’ settings menu and opt into the waitlist.
For those eager to bypass the waiting process, Apple had already made a beta version of iOS 18.1 available earlier this week.
