Alex Van Halen considers AI to revive band’s legacy

In a significant revelation that has captivated the world of rock music, Alex Van Halen, drummer of the legendary band Van Halen, has disclosed his plans to potentially revive the band’s legacy by utilising cutting-edge technology. For the first time since the passing of his brother, Eddie Van Halen, Alex has openly discussed the great sorrow he has experienced, as well as the future of the band’s unreleased material.

During an interview with Rolling Stone, Alex shared his bold idea to breathe life into the vast collection of unreleased recordings left behind by Eddie, a cache that, although substantial, consists mostly of fragmented pieces rather than complete songs. “They’re all little pieces,” Alex noted, articulating that “a bunch of licks don’t make a song,” which presents a unique challenge in terms of crafting finished tracks.

To surmount this hurdle, Alex has considered engaging artificial intelligence to reconstruct Eddie’s iconic guitar work. He has already initiated contact with OpenAI, the organisation renowned for developing ChatGPT, envisioning the AI’s ability to analyse and replicate Eddie’s distinctive playing style. This approach, while innovative, carries the potential for considerable debate among fans and music purists alike.

In a surprising twist, Alex proposed the idea of having Robert Plant, the celebrated frontman of Led Zeppelin, to lend his vocals to the project. Despite a lack of communication with Plant in over 30 years, Alex expressed his aspirations, stating, “Ideally, it’d be Robert Plant. You’re gonna think I’m out of my fucking mind. But when conditions are right, things will manifest,” suggesting an openness to explore creative synergies.

However, this venture has not met with unanimous enthusiasm within the Van Halen family. Wolfgang Van Halen, Eddie’s son, has voiced his concerns about releasing previously unheard material, maintaining that his father had purposefully chosen which works were fit for public release. He remarked, “In dad’s own words, you know, he released what he thought was worthy,” showing his reluctance to indiscriminately reveal Eddie’s private recordings.

Despite differing opinions about the future of the unreleased material, fans can soon expect a new track titled “Unfinished.” This piece, recorded by the Van Halen brothers, will be made available as part of the audiobook edition of Alex’s forthcoming memoir, Brothers, slated for release on October 22. “Unfinished” is anticipated to be a moving homage to Van Halen’s enduring influence in the hard rock genre, providing a glimpse into their artistic process and offering fans a final memento of the legendary band’s creative spirit.
