In response to a significant scheduling error earlier this year, Alaska Airlines is integrating AI technology to improve its flight scheduling processes and overall operational efficiency.
Alaska Airlines, the Seattle-based airline, is making substantial strides towards integrating artificial intelligence (AI) into its regular operational processes, specifically in optimising flight scheduling. This development comes as a direct response to a scheduling blunder that occurred earlier this year, severely impacting the airline’s passenger numbers and profitability on a specific route.
In an instance described by the airline, a minor adjustment in flight timing led to significant operational challenges. The issue arose when Alaska Airlines decided to shift the timing of its daily flight from Redmond Municipal Airport (RDM) to San Francisco International Airport (SFO) by just one hour. This change, although seemingly inconsequential, resulted in the flight arriving at SFO after many connecting flights to the East Coast and Southern California had already departed. The outcome was a substantial drop in passenger numbers and a notable decrease in the route’s profitability, as informed by Kristen Amrine, Vice President of Revenue Management and Network Planning at Alaska Airlines. The airline reported that the route’s margin plummeted by double digits, causing significant disruption to its operations.
To address such challenges, Alaska Airlines has partnered with UP.Labs to introduce an AI-centric startup named Odyssey. This initiative uses AI to refine real-time operational logistics, with a primary focus on flight scheduling. Odyssey enables the airline to forecast the consequences of any schedule adjustments on revenue, profitability, and reliability. Furthermore, this partnership has led to the creation of Alaska Star Ventures, the airline’s investment arm, which is collaborating closely with Odyssey to develop predictive AI tools. These tools are expected to enable Alaska Airlines to effectively utilise its aircraft across its network by rapidly assessing the impact of proposed schedule alterations.
According to Steve Casley, CEO of Odyssey, the AI technology has undergone rigorous testing on over 700,000 flight segments from Alaska’s operations between 2022 and 2023. The tool demonstrated an impressive 90% accuracy rate when compared with decisions made by human schedulers. Casley elaborated that the tool provides schedulers with essential insights when managing complex flight operations, such as determining the best time to move flights to avoid potential delays and maximising revenue.
The AI-powered solution is designed to be more efficient than manual scheduling, where currently each flight change needs to be individually examined. With Odyssey, schedulers can propose multiple adjustments swiftly, and instantly receive data-driven insights on how these changes might affect the airline’s financial and operational metrics.
Although still in the testing phase, Alaska Airlines anticipates the full implementation of Odyssey’s AI technology in its operations by the first half of the following year. This advancement promises to enhance the efficiency and profitability of the airline’s flight scheduling, limiting the chances of operational disruptions like those experienced on the Redmond to San Francisco route. The airline remains optimistic about the potential of AI to transform its scheduling processes, potentially setting a precedent for the broader aviation industry.
