April’s struggles began in April 2022 with weakness in her right leg, leading to her first fall on Mother’s Day that year. A series of medical consultations ensued, including visits to orthopaedic doctors, spinal experts, and neurologists, all hoping for a reversible diagnosis. However, only days after Christmas 2022, the Kerner family received the heart-wrenching diagnosis from medical professionals that it was indeed ALS.
By May 2023, April had begun losing her voice, with respiratory failure the following month requiring the insertion of a tracheostomy that took away her voice completely. This circumstance posed a significant emotional and communicative barrier for the family, particularly for her young children, Ryker, Ava, and Jax, then just four and five years old.
In search of a method to bridge the communicative gap, April and her husband, Bill, discovered ElevenLabs, a company dedicated to creating human-like text-to-speech programmes using AI technology. The company requested recordings of April’s voice, which they then adeptly utilised to produce a voice that closely resembled her original tones, unlike the typical robotic alternatives available in many standard programmes. April now types messages with her eyes, which are then vocalised by the AI in her recreated voice.
This technological innovation has brought a semblance of normalcy back to the Kerner household. The cadence might be slightly off, as Bill notes, but to the Kerners, it represents a piece of April restored. The moment her children first heard their mother’s AI voice was filled with joy, sparking a heartwarming scene as they jumped and danced with excitement. April’s AI-assisted voice has also allowed her to participate in cherished family activities such as reading bedtime stories, an interaction that delightfully reunites her family through familiar sounds.
Despite the severe limitations ALS imposes, including the current need for a ventilator and a feeding tube, April finds solace and strength in her renewed ability to communicate.
