This novel device was conceptualised by Personifi AI’s CEO, John McHale, who was spurred by a life-threatening incident involving his dog, Roscoe. After Roscoe’s encounter with a rattlesnake left him in critical condition, McHale envisioned a way for pets to communicate urgent situations. “It got me thinking about AI and how the tragedy could have been averted,” McHale explains, highlighting the potential for such technology to alert pet owners to emergencies.
How It Works
The Shazam Band facilitates interaction by employing AI trained on data sets to translate pets’ movements, behaviours, and neural cues into human language. Equipped with a range of sensors—including a 6-axis gyroscope, GPS, temperature sensor, and speakers—the collar responds to verbal cues from owners and interprets the pet’s physiological states. As McHale refers to it, this “sentience augmentation” aims to articulate pets’ moods and intents through pre-recorded human voice responses. Users can choose from 27 distinctive personas for their pets, with options ranging from a Southern belle to a Jamaican patois.
Safety and Additional Features
Beyond conversation, the Shazam Band also functions as a safety device. Its built-in GPS allows owners to track their pets’ whereabouts, while a geofencing feature uses verbal prompts to keep pets within set boundaries. If a pet encounters danger, such as approaching traffic or potentially harmful wildlife, the owner is notified via a smartphone alert.
Market and Demonstration
Recently showcased in a live demonstration in Texas, the Shazam Band was displayed in action with McHale’s own dog, Roscoe, as the test subject.
