Recent analyses reveal a significant rise in AI-generated content on Medium, prompting discussions about the platform’s authenticity and the implications for digital publishing.
AI-Generated Content Proliferates on Medium, According to Recent Analyses
In an era where artificial intelligence is increasingly influencing content creation, the digital publishing platform Medium is reportedly seeing a rise in AI-generated content. Originally launched 12 years ago, Medium has navigated a fluctuating trajectory before achieving financial stability this summer, thanks to a new profit-turning strategy. Positioned as a sanctuary for authentic human writing, the platform now faces an influx of synthetic authorship, as suggested by recent studies.
Two separate analyses conducted by AI detection startups, Pangram Labs and Originality AI, have indicated a significant prevalence of AI-generated content on Medium. Pangram Labs scrutinised 274,466 posts over a span of six weeks and concluded that over 47 percent were likely generated by AI. This percentage is markedly higher compared to their examination of other online platforms, where the figure stood at around 7 percent. Max Spero, CEO of Pangram Labs, noted the stark contrast, underlining the sharp increase in AI-generated contributions on Medium relative to the broader internet landscape.
Originality AI similarly assessed content on Medium, comparing posts from 2018 to those from the current year. Their findings corroborate Pangram’s: in 2018, only 3.4 percent of posts were detected as AI-generated, a figure reflecting the company’s false positive rate at a time when AI use was minimal. In contrast, their analysis of 473 articles from 2024 revealed that just over 40 percent likely originated from AI. Despite conducting independent analyses, both companies reported analogous results, highlighting what appears to be a growing trend.
The nature of AI content on Medium tends to be relatively mundane, focusing on topics such as cryptocurrency rather than the more eccentric content sometimes seen on platforms like Facebook. The analysis revealed that content tagged with phrases like “NFT”, “web3”, “ethereum”, “AI,” and unexpectedly, “pets,” were prominently AI-generated. Out of 5,712 articles tagged with “NFT,” approximately 78 percent were assessed as AI-generated by Pangram Labs.
In response to these findings, Medium CEO Tony Stubblebine has contested the significance of the analysis results. He expressed skepticism regarding the importance of the findings and the suggestion that Medium is particularly vulnerable to AI content influx. According to Stubblebine, the focus should not skew towards these AI analyses’ conclusions, which he perceives as not revealing substantial insights about Medium’s content environment.
This discussion around AI-generated content on Medium brings into focus broader debates about the role of AI in publishing and the potential implications for platforms traditionally focused on human expression. While the diverging views of Medium executives and AI detection companies continue to exist, the dynamic underscores the evolving landscape of digital content creation.
