A new survey indicates that widespread adoption of Agentic AI systems is poised to revolutionise industries, with a majority of enterprises planning to integrate such technologies in the coming years.

The integration and widespread adoption of Agentic Artificial Intelligence (AI) systems within enterprises are set to redefine industries, according to recent findings from a Capgemini survey. The study, which surveyed 1,100 executives at large enterprises, has provided a clear picture of how AI agents are being perceived and integrated into business operations. Current data reveals that 10% of organizations are already utilising AI agents, with more than half planning to do so within a year and a significant 82% aiming for integration in the next three years.

The primary drivers for adopting AI agents include enhanced workflow automation, improved customer service and satisfaction, and increased productivity. Each of these aspects reflects a growing consensus among 71% of respondents regarding workflow efficiency, 64% on customer interactions, and 57% on productivity. A notable area of application lies within software development, where AI can generate, evaluate, and rewrite code, marking the largest use case with 75% of enterprises seeing potential.

The move towards autonomous AI systems signifies a robust commitment from businesses to not only engage with the technology but to integrate it as a core component of their organisational structure. Jayesh Govindarajan, Executive Vice President of Salesforce’s AI Platform, highlights the urgency and competition among businesses to adapt quickly to AI advancements, underscoring a heightened focus surpassing even economic concerns like inflation.

Gartner’s analysis positions Agentic AI as a pivotal innovation with the potential to empower workers by enhancing decision-making and prediction intelligence in organizations. Tom Coshow, a senior director analyst at Gartner, illustrated how AI can autonomously analyze extensive datasets and make informed decisions, marking a leap from current AI models that primarily operate under human prompts.

The emergence of these AI technologies is also underscored in Gartner’s Hype Cycle for Emerging Technologies, where autonomous agents appear, suggesting a trajectory towards increasing autonomy and decision-making capabilities in AI systems. The anticipation is that by 2028, 33% of enterprise software applications will include agentic AI, thereby allowing a substantial portion of work decisions to be made without human intervention.

Forrester Research further reinforces the transformative aspect of AI agents, projecting them as vital components in software development and enterprise operations. The evolution of AI from generative models to more autonomous agents marks a significant shift, promising sophisticated automation capabilities. Moreover, the adoption of edge intelligence is taking AI into device-level integration, exemplified by Apple’s recent AI model incorporations.

Economic impacts are similarly significant, with research from IDC projecting that AI will contribute substantially to global GDP by 2030, amounting to $19.9 trillion. This impact extends to workforce dynamics, wherein new job roles are anticipated to emerge alongside AI augmentation. The IDC’s survey indicates a perception among employees that a considerable portion of their work may soon be automated, emphasizing the transformative nature of AI within professional environments.
