Oppo intensifies its AI efforts with collaborations with tech giants Google and Microsoft to enhance features in its upcoming flagship smartphone series, the Find X8.
Oppo, a leading Chinese smartphone manufacturer, is intensifying its efforts in the field of artificial intelligence (AI) by collaborating with tech giants Google and Microsoft. The company aims to enhance its AI applications as it prepares to launch its flagship smartphone globally.
The collaboration involves weekly discussions between Oppo’s senior management and counterparts at Google and Microsoft. These discussions focus on the development of innovative AI features for Oppo’s next-generation smartphones. Billy Zhang, President of Oppo’s overseas market, sales, and services, emphasised the importance of maintaining proactive and insightful relationships with these tech behemoths. He noted that Google is actively engaging with the firm in China, addressing specific challenges and collaborating on effective solutions tailored to Oppo’s requirements.
Oppo ranks second in mainland China and fourth worldwide in terms of smartphone shipments, according to data from market analysis firm Canalys. The company’s pursuit to integrate AI into its operations is part of a broader strategy to improve production quality, reduce costs, and enhance overall efficiency. A significant portion of Oppo’s product shipments—approximately 60%—is exported to international markets, including Southeast Asia and Europe.
Central to Oppo’s AI-driven strategy is the anticipated release of its flagship smartphone series, Find X8. This series is expected to feature advanced AI capabilities, such as writing and recording summary tools powered by Google’s Gemini and text-to-speech functionality derived from Microsoft’s technology, including products developed by OpenAI like ChatGPT. This aligns with the current trend among mobile manufacturers to leverage AI to improve consumer experiences.
Industry experts suggest that while Chinese companies may hold strong positions in AI innovation, they are likely to lead in consumer applications due to aggressive strategies like the one adopted by Oppo. The company aims to integrate its generative AI technology into 50 million devices within a year. Current applications of AI in Oppo’s devices include enhancements like reflection removal in photos and conversational services akin to ChatGPT.
Since 2020, Oppo has been independently developing its AI models and, in a significant milestone for the company, launched an AI centre in February. Zhang expressed confidence in AI’s potential to revolutionise multiple industries, noting, “AI is the most important area for tech in the future.”
In furtherance of its AI-driven approach, Oppo has introduced a digital management system across its factories in countries such as India and Indonesia. This has reportedly led to significant cost savings and increased production efficiency, allowing the company to better meet market demands in a timely manner.
