The late Sir Michael Parkinson’s voice will be brought back through AI in a new podcast series, celebrating his legacy while exploring the intersection of technology and human interaction.
The late Sir Michael Parkinson, a celebrated British talk show host, is set to have his voice resurrected through artificial intelligence (AI) in a novel podcast series named “Virtually Parkinson”. Michael “Mike” Parkinson Jr, his son, disclosed details about the innovative project during an appearance on ITV’s Good Morning Britain, highlighting that the AI-driven endeavour is not intended to recreate his father’s presence but to celebrate his legacy and explore the evolving interaction between humans and AI.
Sir Michael Parkinson, who passed away at the age of 88 in 2023, was renowned for his interviewing prowess, having engaged with numerous high-profile figures throughout his illustrious career. His son, Mike, explained that the idea for the podcast stemmed from Sir Michael’s interest in technology’s potential to enable interviews with individuals who had passed away. On the programme, he reminisced about his father’s fascination with interview archives, which they often utilised for live shows, books, and documentaries. Sir Michael had expressed a wish for technology that could bring back personalities he never had the opportunity to interview, including icons like Frank Sinatra.
The podcast, set to launch later this year, is an eight-part series produced by Deep Fusion Films. Benjamin Field, a representative from the production company, clarified that more than 1,000 hours of Sir Michael’s past interviews have been fed into the AI to create his voice for the series. However, he emphasised that the initiative is not an attempt to impersonate Sir Michael but to delve into the dynamics between AI and human interactions. This nuanced exploration forms the core of “Virtually Parkinson”, rather than focusing solely on Sir Michael himself.
The inception of this project also ties into Parkinson Jr’s ongoing efforts to preserve and extend the legacy of his father. Prior collaborations between the two included a BBC documentary titled “Parkinson At 50” and a book, “Like Father, Like Son”, capturing their joint experiences and insights. The new podcast will complement The Michael Parkinson Channel on YouTube, a platform dedicated to maintaining the archive of the legendary broadcaster’s work.
In addition to the podcast series, there will be a complementary spin-off show titled “I’m A Celebrity Unpacked”. This show, featuring comedian and former I’m A Celebrity contestant Joel Dommett as the host, aligns with a broader programme schedule set to commence on ITV1 and ITVX starting Sunday, November 17.
Speaking about the spin-off, Dommett noted on Good Morning Britain that having been involved in past editions of similar shows, he is excited about the new format, which includes participation from presenters Ant and Dec.
Overall, while Sir Michael Parkinson’s physical presence will not be recreated, the project titled “Virtually Parkinson” stands as a reflection of his enduring impact on broadcasting and the continual innovations in the realm of digital media.
