With the launch of the iOS 18 update, Apple aims to enhance user experience on its latest devices and strengthen its market position amid growing competition in AI technology.
Apple has launched a significant software update that integrates artificial intelligence (AI) into the iPhone 16 series, aiming to strengthen its position in the ever-evolving tech landscape. The iOS 18 update, released on a Monday, follows the earlier availability of the iPhone 16, which debuted with pricing ranging from $800 to $1,200. This update is not limited to the latest phone models but extends to last year’s high-end versions, the iPhone 15 Pro and iPhone 15 Pro Max, which also house the necessary chip for AI functionality.
This introduction of AI marks a pivotal moment for Apple’s virtual assistant, Siri, intended to evolve into a more interactive and adaptable digital companion. Siri will be reimagined, with its interactions marked by a glowing light circling the iPhone’s screen, underscoring Apple’s drive to enrich user experience amid the backdrop of growing competition in AI technology.
Several innovative features accompany this update: advanced writing and proofreading capabilities, improved photo editing tools, and more efficient methods to locate stored images. However, interoperability with other apps remains pending until a future update. Upcoming software updates are anticipated to expand the AI’s capabilities, including generating customised emojis and integrating assistance from OpenAI’s ChatGPT for specific queries.
Despite these advancements, international iPhone users must wait until next year to access the AI software, as a release date outside the U.S. remains unspecified. Apple spent five weeks trialling the software with selected iPhone users to optimise its functionality before this official rollout.
To further distinguish itself from competitors, Apple has branded its AI suite as “Apple Intelligence,” emphasising enhanced privacy measures. These measures ensure that the technology either operates directly on the device or is managed via secure data centres for remote processing. This promise aims to assuage any potential privacy concerns among users.
The iOS 18 software update is expected to stimulate demand for new Apple products, particularly during the holiday season. The anticipation of this AI integration has already favourably impacted Apple’s market performance, with its stock price enjoying an 18% increase since the AI strategy was highlighted at a conference in Cupertino, California, in June. This surge has augmented Apple’s market value by approximately $500 billion, steering the company towards potentially becoming the first U.S. firm to achieve a $4 trillion market value.
Moreover, Apple has disclosed that select AirPods models will now function as hearing aids post-update, addressing the needs of an estimated 30 million Americans with hearing loss. This enhancement is likely to appeal to a segment of users who may benefit from hearing assistance but have not previously explored hearing aids.
Apple’s imminent financial report, covering the July to September quarter, will shed light on the initial market response to the iPhone 16 models. According to the research firm International Data Corp, iPhone shipments saw a 3.5% rise compared to the same period last year, with Apple maintaining its position as the second-largest smartphone distributor globally, trailing only Samsung. Observers will be keen to see if the ongoing AI developments influence consumer decisions during upcoming festive shopping periods.
