During a recent event in Shanghai, Honor revealed its upcoming Magic 7 smartphone, showcasing advanced AI functionalities that aim to enhance user experience and competitiveness in the high-end smartphone market.
Honor, a prominent Chinese smartphone manufacturer, showcased a suite of advanced artificial intelligence (AI) functionalities for its upcoming devices during an event held on 26 June 2024 in Shanghai. The company, which emerged as a spin-off from technology giant Huawei, aims to strengthen its foothold in the high-end smartphone market with this latest innovation.
During the presentation, Honor revealed enhancements to its Android-based Magic operating system, distinctly integrating AI capabilities designed to operate as a virtual assistant. A key demonstration highlighted the phone’s ability to process imprecise voice commands. For instance, with a simple directive such as “I’m tired, order something”, the phone autonomously initiated a coffee order, bypassing the need for any manual input from the user. Although the AI handles most of the interaction, it requires human involvement at the payment stage.
Furthermore, this sophisticated AI assistant can manage documents and execute communications through platforms like WeChat, all without requiring physical engagement from the user. Honor is developing certain AI functionalities in collaboration with Baidu and other domestic technology firms for the Chinese market, while it partners with Google for devices destined for international markets.
These newly announced AI features are scheduled to debut with Honor’s forthcoming flagship, the Magic 7 smartphone, set for release on 30 October. Honor anticipates extending these AI capabilities to its complete range of devices by early next year.
The Magic 7 will be powered by Qualcomm’s recently unveiled Snapdragon Elite 8 processor, as emphasised during Honor’s teaser at Qualcomm’s annual event earlier this week. This aligns with Xiaomi, another Chinese electronics powerhouse, which also plans to integrate the Snapdragon Elite 8 chip into its latest smartphone offering later in the month, although it has been comparatively discreet about any prospective AI enhancements.
In a conversation following the Shanghai event, Toby Zhu, a senior analyst at the market research firm Canalys, remarked on the significant advancements presented by Honor’s AI features. Zhu suggested that these capabilities could potentially sway consumers towards adopting a different brand’s device.
Despite the innovative strides by domestic manufacturers like Honor and Xiaomi, Zhu noted that Apple, another key player in the Chinese smartphone market, is not expected to experience a substantial decline in market share, based on current data.
As these AI technologies emerge, they mark a significant milestone in the evolving landscape of smartphone functionalities, influencing both consumer preferences and competitive dynamics within the industry.
