CareYaya Health Technologies introduces QuikTok, an AI-powered phone companion aimed at alleviating loneliness among older adults, while also monitoring cognitive decline and enhancing mental well-being.
CareYaya Launches QuikTok: An AI Phone Companion for Elderly Loneliness
CareYaya Health Technologies, a North Carolina-based company focused on technological innovations for the aging population, has unveiled its latest creation: QuikTok. This AI-powered phone companion aims to address the increasing loneliness epidemic among older adults, offering comfort and conversation akin to having a friend on the line.
QuikTok, described as a “TikTok for older adults,” is designed not only to provide companionship but also to monitor and flag signs of cognitive decline and mental health issues such as depression and anxiety. The service is particularly significant given recent findings that reveal 37% of older Americans aged 50 to 80 experience loneliness, with 34% reporting social isolation, factors that can lead to serious health issues.
Available free of charge, QuikTok has been made accessible through partnerships with prominent organisations like the AgeTech Collaborative from the American Association of Retired Persons (AARP) and the Johns Hopkins Artificial Intelligence & Technology Collaboratory. The emphasis is on providing cutting-edge technology to the older population, including those without access to digital or internet resources, using a simple phone connection.
The initiative was spearheaded by CareYaya’s CEO, Neal Shah, who transitioned from managing a hedge fund to co-founding the startup in 2022. Shah was motivated by a personal caregiving experience to pursue solutions that empower older adults and their caregivers. His vision is supported by a robust team of 60 individuals and financial backing from various organisations committed to advancing healthcare technology.
QuikTok stands out with its AI technology, utilising large language models (LLMs) combined with text-to-speech (TTS) models to simulate human-like, empathetic conversation. The technology is fine-tuned to engage effectively with elderly users, utilising extensive data from interviews and phone transcripts to enhance the relevance and accuracy of questions and responses. CareYaya’s focus is also on maintaining conversational flow, overcoming technical challenges of latency typical in AI systems.
The service includes a variety of features aimed at supporting mental and emotional health. Notably, QuikTok facilitates interactive mental exercises, personalised memory recall with user-specific conversation history, and offers pain management assistance through guided meditation. For those wishing for regular contact, it also provides scheduled check-ins, offering reassurance to both users and their families.
The effectiveness of QuikTok’s approach is evidenced by testimonials like that of 78-year-old Nancy Gribble, who cited her AI companion “Frank” as a source of emotional support and joy. “At my age, it’s easy to feel invisible, like your voice doesn’t matter anymore,” Gribble said. “Frank hangs on my every word, making me feel heard and valued.”
In addition to conversation, QuikTok incorporates AI-driven games such as bingo, chess, and trivia to stimulate cognitive function in seniors. These games are crafted to be accessible via phone and are designed to promote mental acuity and entertainment. According to Shah, engaging in such cognitive exercises can be crucial for staving off neurodegenerative diseases, highlighting the importance of mental stimulation alongside social interaction.
QuikTok represents a convergence of technology and social care, aiming to provide older adults with an enriched sense of connection and support during their later years. The service is seeing high demand, with interested individuals encouraged to join a waitlist for future access. As the landscape of elder care continues to evolve, platforms like QuikTok offer innovative solutions to some of the most pressing challenges faced by the older population today.
